The Director of Athletics provides leadership in the development, planning, marketing, organization and implementation of the intramural, intercollegiate, gymnastics, recreational, tournament and summer camp programs in accordance with the mission and policies of the University and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

Duties and responsibilities
The Director of Athletics provides leadership in the development, planning, marketing, organization and implementation of the intramural, intercollegiate, gymnastics, recreational, tournament and summer camp programs in accordance with the mission and policies of the University and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The Director reports to the Vice President for Campus & Student Life and works in collaboration with the Student Life office and the Athletics department team to deliver a full range of athletic and recreational activities for the undergraduate and graduate student body.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential duties and responsibilities of this position include the following:
General Responsibilities
- Develops and provides an overall Athletics program—of intramural, intercollegiate, gymnastics and recreational activities—that recognizes and responds to the needs and interests of a diverse student population.
- Works collaboratively and effectively with students, subordinates, administrators and other members of the University community as well as with external entities.
- Selects, hires, trains and supervises one full-time employee, 15 student workers, eight contract coaches, one contract trainer and two contract intramural coordinators in accordance with established policies.
- Advises and mentors students and student groups in the development of choices relevant to appropriate recreational activities and making choices that are consistent with the standards and expectations of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
- Develops and coordinates strategic plans for assessing needs, assessing program participation and satisfaction, setting priorities and making appropriate changes to promote a strong Athletics program.
- Prepares budget proposals and manages Athletics-related financial operations within approved budget guidelines; provides fiscal oversight for each area, including intramurals, intercollegiate athletics, gymnastics and recreation.
- Supervises all Athletics activities with priority given to caring for the safety of participants and following established protocol in the prevention of and response to injury.
- Develops long-term strategic, facility and capital equipment planning related to Athletics.
- Prioritizes needs and purchases athletic equipment and supplies within budget guidelines.
- Maintains an inventory record of all athletic equipment and oversees the effective maintenance of all athletic facilities and equipment.
- Maintains professional growth through training and involvement in professional organizations.
- Serves as a member of various campus committees including the Student Life Directors and Professional Team, Wellness Council, Campus Activities Calendar Planning and other committees as assigned.
- Perform related and other duties as assigned.
Intramurals and Recreation
- Responsible for all aspects of coordinating and scheduling a wide variety of intramural and recreational athletic activities to encourage maximum participation from the student body.
- Coordinates the communication and marketing systems to promote a well-defined and informed intramural and recreational program that encourages maximum participation.
- Supervises, in collaboration with the Department of Public Health, Nutrition & Wellness, the scheduling for Johnson Gym and Beaty Gym and schedules usage of the athletic fields according to a planned schedule of events.
- Hires, trains and schedules student and contract labor to provide supervision and refereeing services as well as keeping appropriate records.
- Develops and maintains expectations and procedures for intramural participants.
- Maintains, in collaboration with campus entities, Johnson Gym and Beaty Gym as well as the outdoor athletic playing fields, courts, etc.
- Ensures proper supervision of games and events as planned and scheduled.
- Develops a plan to meet athletic recreational needs within budgetary allowances and schedules accordingly as facility space allows.
Intercollegiate Athletic Program
- Provides leadership for the comprehensive administration of the intercollegiate athletic program including the selection, training and supervision of coaches and student athletes.
- Provides coaching services where appropriate or as needed.
- Oversees the production of the athletic handbook, bulletins and other publications.
- Coordinates a master athletic calendar that includes the development of game schedules for each sport and demonstrates sensitivity to the academic requirements and religious beliefs of the University.
- Disseminates team schedules for all University sporting events.
- Directs the marketing of the athletic programs that includes the design, development and maintenance of the Athletics department website and ensures current and accurate information is posted.
- Coordinates live streaming services for intercollegiate athletic events on campus.
- Plans and directs fundraising programs.
- Ensures that all intercollegiate athletic events, recruitment activities and eligibility of student athletes are held in compliance with the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
- Develops and oversees an annual orientation program for student athletes.
- Develops appropriate information systems regarding the academic performance of all student athletes as well as works with campus entities as appropriate to ensure that student athletes receive needed intervention in a timely manner.
- Maintains effective relations with Seventh-day Adventist academy coaches to ensure an efficient and effective recruiting network.
- Maintains accurate and official team records, individual records and program history.
- Coordinates all team travel adhering to prudent budgetary practices.
- Coordinates concessions and other sales at home matches.
- Hires, trains and schedules contract labor to provide refereeing services as well as keeping appropriate records.
Special Events, Tournaments, Summer Camps
- Organizes tournaments and assists with planning and implementation of special events as needed.
- Organizes and manages all aspects of the Newmyer Classic academy basketball tournament.
- Develops opportunities in the summer to utilize facilities to maximize revenues and promote the University and Athletics programs.
- Works with Guest & Convention Services to provide services related to the use of the athletic fields for summer band and sports camps.
