Position summary
The Instructor of Architecture holds a faculty appointment and has academic, service, and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the School of Architecture & Interior Design. This individual demonstrates competence in design studio education, teaching of construction technology, and curriculum development at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Qualifications summary
- Master of Architecture degree preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture or a related field.
- Current state building licensure required.
- Construction supervision experience required.
- Evidence of successful built projects.
- LEED certification is a plus.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Lead the hands-on portion of the School design-build projects.
- Teach furniture design courses.
- Supervise the workshop and assigned student workers.
- Teach students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
- Create/Review and update applicable syllabi for courses assigned.
- Evaluate students' course work and design/build studio work for assigned courses.
- Participate in accreditation preparation and visit when applicable.
- Maintain weekly office hours as required by policy to be available to students.
- Participate in department, school and university's committees as required by policy.
- Participate in scholarship, service and teaching activities as required by Andrews University's faculty policy.
- Maintain professional expertise.
- Participate in collecting assessment data for the school.
- Other duties as assigned by the School of Architecture & Interior Design and/or University levels.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise the workshop and associated hands-on design/build projects.
- Supervise assigned students, student workers and graduate assistants.
Qualifications

Technical competencies
- Expertise in the materials, methods, and techniques of current residential and light commercial construction.
- Expertise in the use of woodworking and building construction tools and equipment.
- Ability to repair and maintain workshop tools and equipment.
- Current knowledge and experience in the use of information and computer technology (e.g. AutoCad, Revit, and SketchUp) or proven ability to learn these skills.
- Ability to navigate the online environment and work with Learning Management System (LMS) - Moodle preferred but training will be given.

- Must be comfortable mentoring students about living a Christian workplace witness.
- Must be comfortable teaching students hands-on construction skills.
- Must be comfortable interacting with students in an advisory role.
- Must be comfortable interacting with multiethnic and multinational faculty and student population.
- Must be able to work as a team member.
- Must have the ability to form good student and peer relationships.
- Must be a dynamic presenter/speaker/teacher
Physical demands
- Must be able to perform normal classroom and design studio instruction.
- Must be able to lift heavy construction materials and equipment in a safe manner.
Work environment
- Lecture classes will be taught mostly in the Architecture building.
- Hands-on courses will be taught in the School workshop, where noise may exceed 80 db. at times.
