Position summary
This staff position has half time teaching responsibilities in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum. The Curriculum and Instructional Design Specialist for the Department of Digital Learning and Instructional Technology (DLiT) provides highly skilled professional service to meet the instructional design needs of online faculty by providing a) online teaching training and support; b) instructional and curriculum design for online and blended courses; c) oversight of the learning design process. The Curriculum and Instructional Design Specialist will report to the online Course Manager in DLiT and to the Chair in the Department of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum.
Qualifications summary

- Certification in Literacy or Special Education
- Evidence of courses or training in learning theory and instructional design
- Experience in higher education instructional design support preferred
- Evidence of scholarship and publications preferred

Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
Curriculum and Learning Design Specialist Duties/Responsibilities:
- Support the design and production of interactive online, self-paced, and blended courses and program curriculums for on campus, online campus, and off campus.
- Provide instructional design and online teaching support to online faculty.
- Conduct training and facilitation of subject-matter experts on the processes and tasks associated with program and course design and development.
- Evaluate and assist in the selection of high-quality learning resources for degree programs.
- Work with the Course Manager to support the online course development process
- Consult with the Course Manager and Associate Dean on the strategic direction of courses and programs in the pipeline, their status and activities during their design and development.
- Develop course curricula according to Andrews University’s development model and quality standards.
- Reviews trends regarding online learning and makes recommendations on how to expand and improve instruction.
- Provide training and oversight of the curriculum and learning design support provided by the instructional design graduate students and contract workers.
- Participate in Learning Design meetings for all new courses and review the learning design on existing courses.
- Collaboratively shape online teaching and learning guidelines.
- Research and support the continuous quality improvement of online courses.
- Attend professional conferences, research new trends, and report back to relevant audiences.
- Serve on university committees related to online and blended instructional design.
- Work closely with Associate Dean, Course Manager, and other Specialists as a team where necessary, and also work on own initiative where appropriate.
Professor Duties/Responsibilities:
- Teach a maximum of 12 credits per school year.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate students.
- Create/Review and update applicable syllabi for courses assigned.
- Evaluate students' course work for assigned courses.
- Participate in accreditation preparation and visit when applicable.
- Maintain weekly office hours to be available to students.
- Participate in TLC department faculty meetings.
- Participate in collecting assessment data for the department.
- Participate in department, school and university's committees.
- Participate in scholarship, service and teaching activities as required by Andrews University's faculty policy.
- Attend professional conferences and research new trends in literacy or special education.
Supervisory responsibilities
Provide team supervision to 5-6 Instructional Facilitators supporting online faculty through the course development process and online teaching experience
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- PhD degree
- Degree qualifications preferred: literacy or special education; education, educational technology, or instructional design
- North American K-12 teaching experience preferred
- Online teaching experience preferred
- Certification in Literacy or Special Education
- Evidence of courses or training in learning theory and instructional design
- Experience in higher education instructional design support preferred
- Evidence of scholarship and publications preferred
- Online teaching experience preferred

- Knowledge of how to teach literacy or special education

Technical competencies
- Skilled in using web and media based technologies for education such as but not limited to GoogleDocs, webinar software, and Web 2.0 tools to support blended and online learning
- Knowledge of Moodle LMS is preferred; other LMS experience, such as with Blackboard, Canvas, ANGEL, WebCT, and Desire2Learn, is a plus
- Knowledge of educational applications of social media
- Quick learner, specifically as it relates to computers and computer applications

- Absolute dedication to on-going client communication, providing frequent updates on deliverables, milestones, known issues and timelines
- Ability to form good student and peer relationships

Physical demands
Must be able to focus on a computer screen for length of time
Work environment
The DLiT office is a semi-open space with moderate noise. Customers come and go, receiving assistance from multiple team members. Multiple meetings with customers may occur in a semi-open space at the same time.
