Position summary
The Summer High School Advancement Program is a pilot program designed to support children living with intergenerational poverty. This program is created for high school students needing Math recovery. The 12-15 students enrolled in the course will have access to a full educational service with a qualified educational team. Certified teachers will grade lessons and exams and interact with students in Math (Algebra I). Andrews University students will receive training to provide tutoring and serve as Learning Coaches to improve student engagement and foster a learning environment designed for each student’s academic success.
Qualifications summary
University students with strong Math (Algebra) background and experience tutoring. Individuals must be effective communicators, resilient, capable of providing academic and emotional support, willing to be a mentor and positive role model, and interested in supporting high school freshmen develop college readiness.
Duties and responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to be present for all sessions of the program. The program will run from
June 18 - July 5, and July 30 - August 17. Classes are scheduled Monday-Thursday (8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.).
Tutors will daily:
- Review and help clarify concepts in Algebra
- Support students with the timely completion of assignments
- Forster a positive learning environment for students who struggle with mathematics
- Help monitor the academic progress
- Participate in field trips
- Provide on-call (telephone) support to student with completion of class assignments
Successful candidates must pass a background checks and successfully complete training in GIA curriculum.

Qualifications
Strong background in high school Math (Algebra 1) and experienced tutor/certified teacher.
Technical competencies
Be able to work with online classes.
Interpersonal interactions
Must be comfortable working with high school students from diverse backgrounds and be willing to interact in an advisory role.
Physical demands
Ability to engage with high school students on field trips which may entail walking, hiking, riding or other physical activities.
