MEIER HALL - Maintenance Assistant Supervisor

Position summary

The maintenance assistant supervisor works under the direction and guidance of the Residence Hall and Residence Life Directors.  Approximately 10-15% of the assistant supervisor’s work week is spent in leadership and training and 85-90% is spent in personal response to maintenance needs, routine duties, preventative maintenance, and work orders

Qualifications summary

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties by Detail

The maintenance assistant supervisor ensures that the following detailed duties are responded to in a timely manner and according to schedule through personal attention and allocation of the maintenance team.

 

These duties are to:



Check and maintain Desk, RA, and Housekeeping vacuums.

The following are to be done in consultation with the Residence Hall and Residence Life Directors:

Supervisory responsibilities

Directly supervises 2-6 student employees, as budget allows.  Responsible for the training and supervision of workers on policies, procedures, and skills needed to accomplish jobs at hand.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws, Andrews University and the residence hall organization’s policies with budgetary allowance.  Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these areas.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE SKILLS

Basic English reading, writing, and communication skills are necessary.  Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret documents such as instructions, correspondence, memos, job descriptions, safety rules, maintenance instructions, product usage instructions and procedures manuals.  Ability to write simple correspondence, memos, and routine reports.  Ability to communicate effectively using good public relationship skills with one-on-one, small group situations, employees, residents, other departments, businesses, and contractors.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, proportions, percentages, and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.  Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in a variety of circumstances regarding organizational decision, priorities, time lines, and interpersonal conflicts. 

 

 


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

Basic computer skills in WordPerfect and Word are necessary.  Ability to retrieve and send emails.  Some knowledge of Spanish would be helpful.

Interpersonal interactions

Must have skills in leading and building a team to work together and efficiently.

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, knee, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand sit, and taste or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perceptions and attention to tiny detail.

Work environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
