Position summary

The vice president for financial administration serves as the chief financial officer and treasurer of the university. The vice president is an ex-officio member of all sessions, councils, committees, sub-committees and faculties within the university.

Duties and responsibilities

The vice president shall perform the following functions as the president may delegate:


  1. Formulate the overall business and accounting procedures of the institution and coordinate day-to-day operations through the persons answering to this office.

  2. Implement the objectives of strategic plans that deal with financial matters.

  3. Supervise the accounting and business systems, designate the place and manner in which financial records shall be maintained

  4. Supervise the handling of, and be responsible for all cash and negotiable securities of the university.

  5. Care for the handling of funds and investments, in counsel with the president

  6. Negotiate and maintain relationships with financial institutions.

  7. Invest university and trust money as authorized.

  8. Sign checks and other routine documents.

  9. Oversee through the controller the receipt, safekeeping and proper disbursal of university funds.

  10. Work with the controller and the vice presidents in assisting the president in the direction and control of the annual budget.

  11. Take responsibility for university insurance claims and the purchasing of student accident and medical coverage.

  12. Hold the significant papers and legal documents that relate to the business administration of the university.

  13. Oversee, through assistants, the supervision, maintenance and improvement of the physical plant.

  14. Assist the president in planning of new buildings and supervise their construction.

  15. Oversee the purchase of all equipment and supplies.

  16. Make recommendations on reimbursement, benefits and perquisites for faculty and staff members; and regulate student charges in consultation with the vice president for campus and student life, the human resources director and student financial services.

  17. Supervise the operation of relevant auxiliary and service departments.

  18. Oversee the security of the physical plant including fire protection, insurance coverage, safety inspections, the conducting of fire drills, the opening and closing of buildings, night watch checks and the rendering of appropriate reports.

  19. Supervise the functioning of the independent operations of the university.

  20. Chair the Campus Safety Committee.

  21. Chair the university finance and budget committees.



Supervisory responsibilities

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

The vice president for financial administration direct reports are the controller, the director of facilities management, the director of campus safety, the assistant vice president for student financial services, the general manager of dining services, the manager of the bookstore, the manager of the post office and the manager of the farm.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in Accounting/Finance, Master’s degree and/or CPA preferred.

A minimum of four years of related experience in a leadership/executive role with evidence of skills in effectively leading and working with a team of other professionals.

Demonstrated experience in:



Preferred experience working in higher education, or proven capacity to engage effectively with different employment environments.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively develop and present information and policy to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, including capacity to empathize and resolve conflict.

Ability to work with data, mathematical concepts such as probability, and statistical inferences and apply to practical situations. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables with creativity and identify potential solutions to complex situations. Proven capacity to move from potential solutions to action and to conceptualize use of technology to solve problems.
