Position summary
Coordinates and manages the Nursing Department’s skills lab and simulation center. The individual in this position will assure the effective and efficient operation of the lab, assess and provide for meeting program and student needs, and oversee the operation of high and medium fidelity technology to ensure safe and effective use of the simulation equipment. The individual will maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment, and learning resources; ensuring compliance with OSHA standards of safety rules and regulations; working with students in skills practice, demonstration, simulation, and remediation. This position also involves teaching in the Department of Nursing.
Qualifications summary
- MSN/DNP/Ph.D. from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of 2 years medical-surgical hospital experience required.
- Current Michigan RN licensure or eligibility for licensure in Michigan State
- Simulation laboratory experience required.
- Experience in clinical teaching for medical-surgical nursing or skills lab preferred.
- Certification in simulation is preferred.
Duties and responsibilities
- Teach didactic and clinical courses assigned.
- Creates realistic Nursing Laboratory patient unit environment for skills & simulation sessions.
- Supports the planning and utilization of skills & simulation in the Nursing program.
- Coordinates preparation of, and use other equipment for conducting skills & simulation.
- Collaborates with Course Coordinators and faculty to ensure preparation of lab supplies and equipment based on faculty requests and course schedule.
- Operates the patient simulator during simulation sessions.
- Solicits instructor and student feedback following skills & simulation experiences.
- Sets-up and tears-down skills & simulation labs for groups between daily sessions.
- Participates in debriefing sessions with instructors following each skill & simulation session.
- Maintains adequate supplies and equipment as needed for skills & simulation sessions.
- Provide proper storage of and collaborate in the maintenance and repair of lab equipment.
- Maintains confidentiality of data, e.g. student skills & simulation performance, student profiles, grades, clinical information, and budget information.
- Assists with ordering lab supplies, media programs, and equipment while maintaining inventory.
- This includes contact with outside simulation equipment vendors.
- Prepares computer medication carts for faculty and student use during practice, skills & simulation sessions, and competency testing.
- Provides skills & simulation instruction, practice supervision (1:1 and small group), and testing of nursing skills.
- Collaborates with faculty with skills & simulation development activities.
- Completes work in a timely manner, including preparing, documenting, and tracking student and faculty lab utilization.
- Participates in planning and scheduling for students and faculty by ensuring open lab and structured lab utilization times are available and communicated and appropriately resourced.
- Coordinates with instructors and supervises students to ensure that lab experiences meet course objectives; provides individual oversight to students for practice and/or remediation on technical skills as requested by faculty and students.
- Attends and participates in the level team and department meetings for continuity of the program.
- Participates in departmental committee, assessment, and accreditation committee work.
- Serves as a role model for faculty, staff, and students in the areas of customer service, collaboration, communication, excellence, attendance, and general professionalism.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Supervise assigned students, student workers and graduate assistants.
Qualifications

Technical competencies
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft office.
- Comfortable with classroom presentation technology like PowerPoint etc.
- Comfortable with the use of healthcare technology and tools like EHR, BCMA etc.
- Monitoring and operating high fidelity manikins.
Interpersonal interactions
- Ability to interact with many students.
- Comfortable interacting with multiethnic and multinational faculty and student population.
Physical demands
- Able to keep up with the physical demand required for students’ practicum rotation within the healthcare settings if needed.
- Must be able to move manikins when needed.
Work environment
- Labs will be taught mostly in Marsh Hall, Andrews University
