CAMPUS SAFETY - Patrol Officer

Position summary
This posting is for a midnight shift (11pm-7am) patrol shift position.
The responsibilities of this position are to fulfill the needs of a Patrol Officer, capable of working in the Patrol Division. Primary responsibilities include providing for the safety of the campus through a myriad of responsibilities, including responding to emergencies, requests for assistance, and the physical security of buildings and property.
The position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible to work a regular shift schedule that can include; working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.
Qualifications summary
Associate’s degree from two-year college or university; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Any military and/or law enforcement/security experience is preferred. Candidate must pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Candidate must meet qualifications in several areas, including skills in language, reasoning, physical requirements.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Coordinates with local fire and law enforcement personnel for their response to the campus, assisting them with the performance of their duties.
- Crowd control/management for graduation event or special events.
- Ensures all campus buildings are secured and cleared of non-authorized individuals on a daily basis per the individual department schedule.
- Ensures proper recording, accuracy, safekeeping, and follow through of all investigative matters assigned.
- Ensures operational readiness through inventory and maintenance of supplies and equipment.
- Investigates all matters reported to the Office of Campus Safety, which could include burglaries, auto theft, vehicles accidents, lost and found property, fights, and or any other criminal matter or reported/referred code of conduction violations which occurs on campus.
- Enforces parking/driving regulations.
- Operates University vehicles during all weather conditions, including inclement weather.
- Patrols the campus grounds and buildings by foot and vehicle.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Responds to all requests for assistance; assists, criminal activity, and emergencies.

Qualifications
- A working knowledge of communications equipment.
- Ability to rely on experience, training and judgment to execute policies and procedures.
- Ability to work cohesively in a team oriented environment.
- Advance communication and customer service skills with the faculty, staff, students, community visitors and emergency response agencies over the telephone and in person to resolve conflicts or respond to emergency incidents.
- Advanced proficiency in English speaking and writing skills.
- Available for on call response to emergencies involving fire, occupational safety, environmental safety, or emergency management.
- Computer proficient in Microsoft Office Professional and Excel.
- Exceptional skill in time management.
- Experience within a law enforcement or military preferred.
- Maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid and AED.
- Must be able to complete a formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy accepted)
- Must be able to work shift assignments.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must function well while under stress.
- Must have excellent human relation skills, dealing with a wide variety of people.
- Must have or obtain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Must obtain/maintain certification in Ground Avoidance Ground Escape.
- Must obtain/maintain certification in Pressure Point Control Tactics.
- Must obtain/maintain certification in the deployment and use of Olerin Capsicum Aerosol.
- Must pass a criminal background check.
- Must pass a drug screening test
Language Skills:
The position requires the ability to explain college policies in difficult situations; write and edit reports or technical documents, and prepare public education documents.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add and subtract and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to understand and to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in non-standardized situations. Ability to respond to varying incident types under stress and make leadership decisions affecting subordinates and the campus population. Must be capable of patience and flexibility inherent in the Safety Officer position in dealing with the multitude and variations of problems that arise in the function of the Office of Campus Safety, which includes the security and wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff on campus while ensuring the security of property and the grounds. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Accountability:
The position has the authority to take action or make recommendations that will affect procedures, processes, and practices involving customers or employees within the same department as well as campus wide in regards to the safety of the campus. Requires the ability to work unsupervised and efficiently to accomplish assigned tasks. This includes building evacuations, stop work orders, and/or other actions that affect the operational safety practices of the University.
Other Skills and Abilities:
- Understanding of security and safety related matters.
- Training in basic first aid and emergency medical procedures preferred.
- Crisis intervention skills are necessary.

This position is a main point of contact for Campus Safety with the public. The employee is expected to meet the objectives of Campus Safety while promoting a Christian, friendly environment, both to our diverse campus as well as within the office.
Physical demands

The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee will also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.
