Position summary

Must have a broad spectrum of communication skills to effectively conduct university courses for undergraduate and graduate communication students, participate in appropriate scholarly and service activities, and be an active contributor to the faculty team.  Accordingly the following lists are representative of the knowledge, ability/expertise and commitment required for any person who would mesh well with our needs and mission.  

Qualifications summary

A doctorate in communication and professional experience preferred.

Teaching experience at university level.

Self-confidence, positive attitude with an outgoing personality.

Duties and responsibilities

Exemplifies a Seventh - day Adventist Christian lifestyle.

Demonstrates a genuine commitment for Andrews University, its mission, and holistic education. 

Evidences ability to engage with students as a teacher, advisor and mentor to train communication leaders.

Displays time management and organizational qualities.

Will be available for departmental orientation to become aware of departmental policies and procedures.

Teaches courses as assigned by the department to equal a full-time teaching load.

Prepares course materials in a timely manner and delivers lectures to students.

Prepares, organizes, and directs advising and club activities of students.

Complies bibliographies of specialized materials for outside reading assignments.

Compiles, administers, and grades examinations, or assigns this work to others.

Is committed to student research and conducts research in particular field of knowledge and publishes findings in professional journals.

Serves on department and university committees as assigned by the department and university.

Networks and provides professional support to organizations so that students can gain real world experience.

Participates in curriculum development and evaluation.

Qualifications

Earned doctorate degree preferred.  A doctorate in communication is highly valued.  Professional experience is significant as communication praxis is vital for development of student skills and knowledge. Masters-level candidates must be willing to pursue a doctorate degree. 

Has experience in: consulting, coordination of projects, production of various media types and fund raising. 

Some teaching experience at the university level (Communication discipline preferred)

Teaches undergraduate and graduate students in communication with other possible areas from industry experience.

Advises students, and oversees student research projects.

Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly as it relates to mentoring students and guiding them through creative projects.

Physical demands

Stand, talk and demonstrate at a level to be understood for two or more hours at one time as required for lecture sessions.

Ambulate approximately 500 yards and negotiate 2 flights of stairs to get around campus as needed.

Be able to perform physical tasks relevant to the teaching load.

Work environment

Work environment conditions are similar to those found in any regular office and classroom environment.

Classes will be taught mostly between Nethery Hall and Buller Hall, Andrews University.

May be required to teach evening courses as well as online courses using Zoom (Video Conferencing)  or Course Learning Management System (Moodle/LearninghHub).
