Position summary
Group Fitness Instructors lead, instruct, and motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities, including cardiovascular exercise (exercises for the heart and blood system), strength training, and stretching. They work with people of all ages and skill levels.
Qualifications summary
The Wellness Club Group Fitness Instructors at the Andreasen Center for Wellnessmust be dependable, task-oriented, self-motivated, customer service-oriented, have solid technological and communication abilities and strong organizational and self-management skills. GFI’s must be motivated, focused, outcome-driven and flexible to adapt to the increasing developing facets of The Wellness Club.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Instructs group fitness classes.
- Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class and stay 5 minutes after class to socialize with the class participants and ensure the room is tidy.
- Welcomes all participants in a friendly and outgoing manner.
- Leads and instructs group fitness classes safely while demonstrating proper form and providesmodifications to participants, as necessary.
- Corrects ineffective movements or those which may cause injury.
- Connects with class participants by learning names, engaging in conversation and using communication methods (such as social media) to stay in touch.
- Starts and ends class on time, according to the group fitness schedule.
- Stays on top of new trends and continuously works to improve abilities as an instructor.
- Oversees the proper use of equipment and supplies and makes recommendations when equipment needs to be replaced or new supplies need to be purchased as well as make recommendations to facility management.
- Ensures group exercise space is neat and tidy before leaving.
- Stays up to date on mandatory certifications/trainings.

Qualifications
- A degree in exercise scienceor health related field, preferred.
- A nationally recognized Group Fitness Certification (such as ACE, AFAA, ACSM) and/or Group Fitness SpecialtyCertification (depending on the type of activity and industry standards).
- Knowledge and understanding of group fitness instruction techniques (e.g. cueing, feedback, etc.) and design of classes with demonstrated ability to lead high quality fitness classes and attract high volumes of class participants.
- Availability to teach at least 2 classes per week (unless otherwise agreed).
- CurrentCPR/AEDcertification.
- Exceptional customer service, verbal communication & motivational skills; ability to connect with class participants on a personal level.
- Understands the mission of the Wellness Club at the Andreasen Center for Wellness.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
Able to perform daily technical functions such as operating a cellular device.
Interpersonal interactions
Must be able to communicate effectively and be courteous when interacting with others to create a positive impression. In addition, this candidate should be able to maintain a high level of positive energy and enthusiasm as it relates to anything health, wellness and fitness. Must engage in respectful interaction with all people from all backgrounds as per the diversity and inclusion practices set forth by Andrews University.
Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand/sit/walk/move at high intensities; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Also, must be able to lift and move weighted objects on a regular basis.
Work environment
Fitness Center conditions with average noise levels.
