UNIVERSITY TOWERS - Residence Hall Director

Position summary

The Director of University Towers provides leadership and support to the Director of Residence Life in designing and providing the programming, ministry, nurture and services for graduate students in residential housing as well as the general administration of all facets of the University Towers Residential community for single/mature graduate residents serving a capacity of 294 students. 

The Director gives administrative leadership and support to the operations of Guest and Convention Services, which provides accommodations for year-round guests of the University utilizing approximately 34 guest rooms and provides accommodations during the summer for larger groups and conventions in the residence halls.

Qualifications summary

A graduate degree and previous experience as a residence hall dean is strongly preferred.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities


General Administration

Directs the general and daily administration of the University Towers Program and of Guest and Convention Services.

Directs the processes to evaluate the needs and the implementation of optimum services for year-round University guests and summer conventions.

Provides leadership to the University in selecting and implementing centralized facility reservation processes and services.

Coordinates public relations, marketing, and communications for the University Towers residential community; serves as a liaison with Student Life, the administration, faculty, parents, enrollment services, guests, alumni, and other constituents.

Develops long-range strategic plans for facility renovations and supervises the daily training, management, and coordination of all routine maintenance and housekeeping services to facilitate an optimum living environment.



Directs the financial management of two departmental budgets, University Towers as well as Guest and Convention Services, within the established University guidelines. Participates in budget preparation and makes recommendations for income projections, expenditures, staffing, programs, renovations, equipment, staffing, programs, and supplies.

Responsible for communicating and implementing policies and procedures to ensure and maintain life safety within the context of legal issues in higher education, University expectations, and codes within the state of Michigan.

Student Responsibilities and Rights

Facilitates the development of an environment which fosters student responsibility and accountability within the Graduate Housing community and established University guidelines.

Supports the Vice President in the development of policies, procedures and guidelines for Andrews students and works together with the University Towers staff in the communication and holding students accountable to established guidelines and responds to residents who violate the Code of Student Conduct or the University Towers Graduate Housing Handbook.

Provides counsel and mentoring for students in the development of choices relevant to appropriate social and spiritual activities that are consistent with the values of Andrews University.

Student Support and Crisis Intervention Services

Directs the assessment and provision of support, counseling, advocacy, health care, and crisis intervention services to meet the needs of the residents of University Towers within established protocols and makes appropriate referrals to University resources.

Develops a positive Graduate Housing community and intentionally seeks to build positive relationships with University Towers residents. Maintains a high level of student contact and visibility.

Graduate Student Association Sponsorship

Provides sponsorship to the Andrews University Graduate Student Association (AUGSA) which includes the following:


  • Attendance at officer meetings

  • Attendance at AUGSA events (in coordination with the AUGSA co-sponsor)

  • Assists officers in determining priorities and planning of events



Graduate Residence Life

Assists the Director of Residence Life in evaluating the needs of the graduate residential community in the development of the strategic plans for the comprehensive Graduate Housing Program.

Assists the Director of University Apartments in providing social programming for all residential Graduate students.



Assessment

Assists the Director of Residence Life (according to established University-wide assessment practices) in establishing desired goals and outcomes for the department of University Towers.  Develops formal and informal assessment strategies and opportunities for student feedback to facilitate continuous quality improvement for the University Towers program.

Professional Development

Maintains professional growth through involvement in professional organizations and other developmental activities.


Committee Chair and Representation

Serves as a member of the Student Life Deans Council, Residence Life Deans Council, and serves on other committees as assigned.

Supervisory responsibilities

Supervision, Staff Responsibilities, and Staff Development

The Director supervises one professional staff member that coordinates Guest and Convention Services, three custodial and one maintenance support staff, 2 student administrative assistant, and a team of students that provide 24/7 desk services to the residents of University Towers and to the guests of the University.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities, in accordance with Andrews University policies and applicable guidelines, including staff selection and hiring; job description development; staff training and support; scheduling and directing work; appraising performance; motivating and affirming staff and student employees; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.

Demonstrates and trains staff in principles of student development, Christian values, student rights and responsibilities, legal issues in higher education, etc. to achieve the goals of the Graduate Housing community, Student Life, and the mission of the University.

Directs staff scheduling and participates in a rotational on-call schedule to ensure the availability of staff to provide for the daily needs and issues involving Guest and Convention Services. 

Directs, administers, and supports staff in the operational tasks that include housing assignments and security systems; desk receptionists; laundry; guest, mail, housekeeping and maintenance services; spiritual and social programming; and accountability to established guidelines.

Maintains a close working relationship and intentionally seeks to build morale with all staff, the Director of Residence Life, and other personnel within the division of Student Life.

Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a practicing SDA Christian willing and able to share his faith. He must also be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Experience and skills in administration, communication, conflict resolution, counseling, teaching, discipline, public speaking, group leadership and youth ministry, and computer literacy are required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A graduate degree and previous experience as a residence hall dean is strongly preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Excellent English language and communication skills are required to be able to effectively interface with a wide variety of entities including administration, colleagues teachers, staff, students, parents and the general public. These skills must include the ability to read and analyze, write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Excellent mathematical skills are required, which include basic calculation skills, the ability to read, interpret and develop budget reports that are necessary to perform the financial and facility management aspects of this position.

REASONING ABILITY: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills are required to have the sound judgement to make critical decisions that impact the spiritual, educational, emotional, physical and social welfare of student and staff. The ability to interpret a variety of instructions (written, oral, schedules, etc.) is necessary. Also necessary is the ability to multi task and sort through a variety of variables toward prioritizing and completing work in a timely fashion.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: While employed in this position this individual should be an active participant in professional student services and related organizations.

Physical demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by any employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, climb and to use the senses of sight, touch, hearing, speech, and smell.

A strong physical stamina is required to handle the stress of multiple responsibilities and critical decisions that impact student lives.  Secondly this position will demand intensive, 7 day work weeks that averages 50 hours per week and may often require 60-70 hours per week, with late night hours and frequent interruptions from sleep and personal time.

Work environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The director/dean is required to live in the residence hall facility which accommodates 300+ residents if accommodations are available. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but can be high. Frequent interruptions, noise, and high traffic are common and privacy is limited.
