AIRFRAME AND POWERPLANT SCHOOL - Faculty - Maintenance

Position summary

The aviation maintenance instructor is responsible for teaching, planning, organizing, and operating within an FAA-approved Part 147 program, designed to prepare students for the Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) career and related aerospace and technical fields.  He/she will work under the supervision of the Department Chair, with the other instructors in the program carrying out functions related to the position as described below.

Duties and responsibilities


  1. Teach lecture and lab classes, using a variety of techniques, in Airframe and Powerplant maintenance for the university’s’ FAA approved part 147, Aircraft Maintenance Technician Program.

  2. Demonstrate creative ability to develop curricula, materials, and projects, while building and fixing instructional aids as assigned, for the General, Airframe, and Powerplant Subjects.

  3. Create and modify curriculum as required to meet learning outcomes, to keep up with industry changes.

  4. Maintain and manage equipment, tools, supplies, and inventory.

  5. Create and maintain an atmosphere of professionalism and mutual respect with students, faculty and staff.

  6. Maintain a safe environment through instruction, policy, and continuous evaluation.

  7. Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through:

    • Careful preparation of course materials,

    • Effective teaching methods, and

    • Informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.



  8. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with departmental responsibilities, and departmental and/or University policies.

  9. Maintain scheduled office hours, and participate in department/University meetings and committees.

  10. Provide academic advising and career guidance to students,

  11. Perform administrative tasks including documentation and record keeping. This will include reading budget statements and operating within the fiscal parameters.

  12. Participate in program promotion and public relations.

  13. Move aircraft in/out of hangar; aircraft fueling, and with normal aircraft maintenance activities.



Supervisory responsibilities

The ability to supervise student workers working as lab assistants and mechanic.

Work environment

Must be able to work efficiently in the modern classroom, on the shop floor, as well as outdoors on the flight line in all types of Michigan weather.
