Position summary
In collaboration with the Director, provides leadership in the clinical services of the Counseling & Testing Center, including clinical supervision and the coordintion of the clinical internship program.
Available for after office hours clinical consultations, and student crisis interventions.
Provides individual, couple, and group counseling.
Participates in outreach presentations to assist students in achieving more effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment.
Maintains an assigned case load, and provides consultations on issues related to mental health.
Reports to the Counseling & Testing Center Director.
Qualifications summary
Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an accredited program
Fully Licensed psychologist or license elligibe in the state of Michigan within no more than 1 yr. of employment
MInimum 3 years experience in higher education
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists with the development & maintenance of policies & procedures governing clinical services
- Supervises clinical trainee interns and limited licensed counselors. Assists the director in the orienting and training of new staff.
- In the absence of the director, oversees all clinical operations in accordance with CTC, APA, and State policies and procedures.
- Evaluation: Assists the director with the monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of clinical services, educational programs, initiatives, and intervention strategies.
- Consultation: In collaboration with the director, provides leadership and expertise to the university community regarding issues that affect the educational, developmental and psychological well-being of students. Provides consultation services and occasional in-service training to faculty, administrators, and student leaders on mental health and developmental issues.
- Outreach: Presents workshops/seminars to help individuals achieve more effective personal, spiritual, social, educational and vocational development and adjustment.
- After Hour Coverage: Assists the Director with the management of after-hours and weekend student crisis interventions.
- Oversees the process to insure that clinical services provided meet the needs of the student body (Client Satisfaction Surveys/Assessment Needs).
- Responsible for the revision and updating of clinical service forms.
- Serves as coordinator of the Graduate Crisis Intervention Team & group therapy offerings.
- Represents the Director in his/her absence on the USIT team.
- Participates/attends professional growth seminars to develop and improve diagnostic and counseling skills.
- Participates in special tasks assigned by the director (examples: substance abuse assessment, outreach programming, researching client satisfaction).
- Demonstrates cultural competency in working with diverse populations, including excellent communication & advocacy skills.
- Within the counselor role:
- Collects data about clients through use of clinical interview, case history, and observational techniques.
- Selects, administers, and interprets psychological tests designed to assess individual's personality functioning, intelligence, aptitudes, abilities, and interests.
- Assesses data gathered to develop treatment plan or referral to appropriate agency.
- Provides counseling or psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and groups to assist in gaining insight into personal problems, to define goals, & to plan action reflecting interests, abilities, and needs.
- Follows up results of counseling by participating in research to determine the outcome of services provided.
- Provides consultation services to individuals/groups/families with concerns about students .
- Completes special assessments as requested by various departments of the university.
- Consults with other psychologists and/or medical doctors concerning treatment plan and/or medication evaluation.
- Refers clients to supportive services to supplement treatment and counseling.
- Maintains assigned case load – completes intakes, progress notes and termination summaries.
- Respects the confidentiality of each client.
- Maintains the high ethical standards required by the profession.
- Participates in clinical supervision with the Director and other licensed professional staff
- Participates on appropriate university committees
- Encourages and promotes diversity.
- Demonstrates mental health consultation experience with knowledge of Michigan mental health laws & practices
- Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Supervisory responsibilities
- As assigned by the Center Director, supervises other staff and/or trainees (interns and practicum students). In addition, engages in peer supervision as requested. Will substitute for the Director in his/her absence.
- Supervises clinical trainee interns and limited licensed counselors. Assists the director in the orienting and training of new staff.

Qualifications
PhD/PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
Fully licensed psychologist in the state of Michigan

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills that will allow effective interaction with clients, parents, faculty, staff, medical, mental health and other professionals

Ability to assume leadership roles within the Center, Student Life, and the University.

Knowledge of laws, and ethics in regard to the delivery of clinical services.

Strong crisis intervention and consultation.

Strong organizational skills, ability to manage administrative details, and capacity to keep accurate as well as timely clinical records.

Physical demands
Counseling is a sedentary occupation because a great proportion of the time is spent listening, observing, and interacting with clients in an office. Also important are good vision and hearing so that appropriate assessments can be made. The Counseling & Testing Center is a moderately quiet environment, and the noise level is usually moderate. It is a fairly busy office with students and other members of the university community making frequent connections with Counseling Center staff either physically or electronically.
