WELLNESS CENTER - Aquatics Program Director

Position summary

Oversees the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of Andrews University's Andreasen Center for Wellness Aquatic Facility, which consists of the Pool and Healing Oasis Areas. Oversees the hiring, training, testing, and certification of staff and student employees of the pool. Develops and implements various aquatic programs. Ensures that all appropriate water health and safety standards are maintained.

Duties and responsibilities


  1. Oversees and coordinates the administration of the pool facility, to include scheduling of pool facility operations and communication routes of program opportunities.

  2. Oversees the maintenance of the pools, to include chemistry, climate control, cleanliness, and related maintenance.

  3. Ensures that all appropriate water, environmental, health and safety standards are maintained; ensures pools are compliant with all local, state and national requirements and current on all necessary certifications required for operation.

  4. Develops, implements, and oversees a variety of aquatics programs for students, faculty, staff, and/or members of the general public.

  5. Participates in and teaches aquatic and safety certification training sessions, as necessary.

  6. Participates in the development of annual operating budgets and provides fiscal direction to the unit.

  7. Develops and maintains records of operational facility usage; monitors and maintains inventories of pool equipment and supplies.

  8. Prepares statistical reports on a monthly basis, and prepares data and narrative for inclusion in annual reports.

  9. Represents the organization at various community and/or business meetings, committees, and task forces; promotes existing and new programs and/or policies.

  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.



Supervisory responsibilities


  1. Oversees and coordinates the recruitment, training, scheduling, certification, and performance of student and staff pool employees of the pool facility; supervises the day-to-day activities of employees.

  2. Manager on duty for the whole facility (Andreasen Center for Wellness) at designated times.

  3. Other responsibilities as assigned.



Qualifications


  1. Bachelor's degree or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  2. Certification/Licensure American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification, Lifeguard Certification, and CPR/AED Instructor Certification, Water Safety Instructor Certification, and Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT Preferred but not required).

  3. Must be currently or willing to obtain Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license. 

  4. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  5. Ability to problem solve mechanical or maintenance issues that arise regarding the pool and spa facility systems.

  6. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

  7. Respond and lead appropriately in an emergency situation requiring a rescue, CPR or First Aid.

  8. Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control

  9. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  10. Knowledge of budget preparation, cost estimating, monitoring, and fiscal management principles and procedures. Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies and guidelines for the operation of public swimming pools and public baths.

  11. Skills in program planning and development. 

  12. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Technical competencies


  1. Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

  2. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  3. Build and manage google forms.

  4. Regularly update the pool website and schedule.

  5. Construct registration options for program participants.

  6. Develop a working knowledge and understanding of how to maintain the pool control boards, pumps, uv, and chemical adage systems. 

  7. Skills in developing and maintaining electronic records. 

  8. Knowledge of optimal swimming pool water chemistry, temperature, and cleanliness standards.



Interpersonal interactions


  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  2. Must be comfortable interacting with students in a mentoring role and encouraging leadership amongst the employees.

  3. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.

  4. Ability to recruit, train, and certify student and staff lifeguards and swim instructors.

  5. Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.

  6. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

  7. Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures



Physical demands

Able to lift 40 pounds.

Spend extended period of time standing and sitting as necessary for job responsibilities.

Spend several hours wet either in a row or multiple times per day teaching group or private swim lessons as necessary.

On call 24/7 for any unexpected maintenance or staffing needs or emergencies.

Work environment

Pool deck has loud fan noise levels.

Pool water is generally about 84-86 degrees.

Aquatics Office area is also a group space for both business and mentoring/socializing with the pool employees, providing desk space, table, couch, as well as a shared restroom with student employee leaders (Head Lifeguard, Program Coordinator, and Learn to Swim Coordinator) and table and couch.

Pool pump area is loud and requires use of personal protective equipment when managing pool chemicals.
