Position summary
Fulfillment of chair responsibilities and teaching undergraduate courses in music theory and/or ear training.
Qualifications summary
PhD in a discipline of music or DMA. Evidence of excellence in teaching and potential for scholarly activity are essential. Commitment to teamwork and collegiality. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work with students and colleagues with a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities
- Fulfill all responsibilities as chair. Guide in growing, strengthening, and diversifying the department.
- Teach undergraduate courses in music theory (may include orchestration, composition, counterpoint, and strengthening improvisation within the curriculum).
- Teach applied lessons in a specialized area as needed.
- Promote the department’s mission of mentoring students in artistic, intellectual, and character development.
- Support the International Center for Worship and Music.
- Serve on departmental and university committees.
Supervisory responsibilities
Supervise administrative assistant, graduate teaching assistants, and student workers.
Qualifications
- Candidates should possess a PhD in a discipline of music or DMA. ABD will be considered.
- Expertise in sacred music and music ministry is essential.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching and potential for scholarly activity are essential.
- The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills and be committed to teamwork and collegiality.
- The ability to work with students and colleagues with a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds is essential.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
Familiarity with classroom technology.
Interpersonal interactions
- The chair represents the music department on campus as well as the broader community. This requires a commitment to promoting diversity and engaging with many types of people and organizations.
Physical demands
- Stand, talk and demonstrate at a level to be understood for two or more hours at one time as required for lecture sessions.
- Ambulate approximately 500 yards and negotiate 2 flights of stairs to get around campus as needed.
- Be able to perform physical tasks relevant to the teaching load.
- May be required to teach evening courses as well as online courses using Zoom (Video Conferencing) or Course Learning Management System (Moodle/LearninghHub).
Work environment
The work environment conditions for this job are similar to those found in any regular office and classroom environment. The noise level in the work environment includes music from rehearsal rooms nearby, instruments playing, and vocalization.
