INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE STUDIES - Instructor /Assistant Professor

Position summary
This position will teach 12-13 undergraduate credits in Spanish courses at elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels; advise undergraduate students; conduct research; and support the Department in all aspects.
Qualifications summary
A minimum of Master's degree in Spanish; PhD preferred. Experience in teaching Spanish at both secondary and higher education. Detailed knowledge of all aspects of the Latin American culture. Preference to candidates who have lived for an extensive period of time in a Latin American Spanish speaking country.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
It is expected that the faculty member will:
- Teach 12-13 credits per year in all levels of Spanish courses (elementary, intermediate, advanced, translation, culture, literature).
- Advise students majoring and minoring in Spanish.
- Be actively involved in research related to his/her area of expertise, including attending conferences and making presentations.
- Assist in the accreditation process when needed.
- Attend all faculty meetings (department, college, general).
- Participate in committees as requested.
- Periodically review and update syllabi of Spanish courses.
- Support all activities organized by the Department, including evening meetings with students.
- Sponsor a department club.
Supervisory responsibilities
It is expected that the faculty member will:
- Supervise Spanish lab instructors in both preparing and teaching labs
- Supervise readers as they complete their assigned work
Qualifications
Applicants must:
- Have a completed Master's degree in Spanish. Doctoral degree preferred.
- Have experience teaching Spanish in both secondary and higher education.
- Have experience in online teaching.
- Demonstrate an excellent knowledhe of the Latin American Spanish language and culture. Preference will be given to candidates who have lived in Latin American Spanish speaking countries.
- Demonstrate experience in teaching courses in Spanish for specific purposes such as business, medical professions, speech pathology, and translations.
- Have previous student's evaluations as evidence of high quality teaching.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
Applicants must have agood knowledge of office softwares along with online education platforms. Most Spanish textbooks include online tools that require a good level of expertise by the class instructor.
Interpersonal interactions
Applicants must feel comfortable dealing with students and parents. The selected faculty member will represent the Department of International Languages & Global Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Andrews University when dealing with students and parents. Excellent customer service skills are necessary. Also, the selected faculty will be in contact with prospective students and the interaction between them will be crucial to recruit students.
Evidence of excellent team work skills. The permanent interaction with faculty members and students require excellent inter personal relationship skills.
Physical demands
- Walk from the office to classrooms in the same building or others nearby
- Walk in the cold during winter to go to a classroom located in another building
- Carry books and other materials from office to classrooms
- Stay seated for more than an hour in different faculty meetings
- Extend arms to write on the board in classrooms
- Lift boxes when preparing displays for student previews
Work environment
Candidates must be aware that sometimes the presence of students around offices can create distracting noises.
