Position summary
This position provides strategic planning, direction and implantation of all aspects of Gymnastic programming including the Andrews University Gymnics and the Infinite Gymnastic programs and related coaching responsibilities in accordance with the mission and policies of Andrews University.
Core aspects of this role include coaching and mentoring of students, marketing and recruitment, team selection and training, budget preparation and management, as well as the facility management and care of Beaty Gym and all related equipment. The assistant director provides additional support to the director for special programs and projects as directed.
Qualifications summary
- Education/Experience: minimum of bachelor’s degree with 3+ years coaching
- Knowledge: Certifications and training in first aid and gymnastics safety. A thorough understanding and track record of effective risk management. An in-depth understanding of the fundamentals required for the blend of gymnastics, aerial and circus skills, and acrosports that combine to help make the Gymnic program incredible. A passion for SDA gymnastics and to help students develop personal discipline and a desire to minister to others.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
General Responsibilities
- Facilitate an atmosphere that promotes skill development in an enjoyable, inspirational experience which encourages a balanced healthy life style as well as strengthens the campus and local community.
- Work collaboratively and effectively with students, colleagues, administrators, and other members of the university community.
- Provide marketing and recruiting services to attract students to select Andrews University and the Gymnic program as their educational choice.
- Select, hire, train and supervise student employees and contract coaching positions in accordance with established university policies.
- Prepare budget proposals and manages the Gymnic program related financial operations within approved budget guidelines.
- Work with the director to develop long-term strategic, facility, and capital equipment planning related to the Gymnic program
- Manage the use, care and schedule of all aspects of Beaty Gym including the rock wall and the racquetball courts.
- Identify gymnastic equipment needs, manages the care of equipment and performs routine safety and maintenance inspections according to established safety and best practice standards.
- Develop the processes to produce comprehensive gymnastic program performances according to established best practices for on and off campus events, including the Homeshow.
- Plan and prepare for the program to hold multiple annual tours/trips for a large team, including making all arrangements for transportation, lodging, meals, shows, worships, etc….
- Monitor and mentor team members in their educational development, academic success, and level of attendance and participation in the gymnastic program.
- Develop a regular team practice schedule as well as additional small group, or individual practice times as needed to maximize both individual and team development.
- Provide gymnastic skill level training according to best practice protocols
- Provide spiritual leadership for students and student groups to facilitate maximum whole-person growth. This includes encouraging positive choices consistent with the values of Andrews University and the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
- Thrive in a flexible work schedule that includes working many evenings and various weekend responsibilities.
- Maintain professional growth through membership and involvement in related professional organizations.
Infinite Gymnastic Program
- Provide organization and supervision to the Infinite gymnastics program and staff. This program provides gymnastics classes for K-12 students in the local community (80-100 students per semester).
- Provide marketing to attract participation in the Infinite Gymnastic program.
- Work effectively with the local Berrien Partnership program which provides the funding for homeschool students and students in private school to participate in the Infinite gymnastic program.
- Select, hire, train and supervise student employees to support the Infinite Gymnastic program in accordance with established policies.
- Manages the budget to achieve a net positive revenue stream, including setting fees, staffing the classes and ensuring that appropriate billing and accounts receivable are carefully managed in a timely manner.
Supervisory responsibilities
The assistant director and Gymnastic coach will supervise a number of student employees that assist with the operations of the department as well as several part-time staff and volunteers that assist with coaching responsibilities.

Technical competencies
- Knowledge of best practices in field of gymnastics and acrosports including all phases of skill development and technique execution as well as related safety protocols.
- Knowledge of and experience with office productivity tools, including word processing and basic computer skills.
- Basic mathematical skills: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Any website management/design ability is a plus
