CAMPUS SAFETY - Dispatch Officer

Position summary

This position is posted for the filling of a full-time night shift position stationed at the Campus Safety Gatehouse.
Primary responsibilities include providing for the safety of the campus through a myriad of responsibilities, including responding to emergencies, requests for assistance, through use of communication systems as well serving as primary liaison between the public and the Office.
The position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible to work a regular shift schedule that can include; working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.

Qualifications summary

Associate’s degree from two-year college or university; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Any military and/or law enforcement experience is preferred. Candidate must pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Candidate must meet qualifications in several areas, including skills in computer use, language, reasoning, and physical requirements. Candidates capapble of being cross-trained as a Patrol Officer are preferred. 


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

Competent in Microsoft Office, Windows operating system, database systems (such as Banner). Capable of conducting research though use of a computer (databases, internet, etc.). Capable of operating communications equipment (radio/phone) and working with additional software (security camera systemsa and alarm monitoring systems). Must complete an Andrews University Employment Office Skills Test with a satisfactory result.

Interpersonal interactions

This position is a customer service position as a main point of contact for the Office of Campus Safety with the public. The employee is expected to meet the objectives of Campus Safety while promoting a Christian, friendly environment, both to our diverse campus as well as within the office. Specific skills can include, but are not limited to:


Physical demands

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, jump, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.

While it is impossible to predict all situations that someone might encounter while performing their duties, it is understood, that employees are expected to primarily operate in a customer service/office type setting. Employees are also regularly assigned to work out of the University Gatehouse, where they will be working at service window interacting with vehicles entering and exiting the campus. Due to the nature of security work, during these common activities an employee might be confronted with potentially dangerous situations associated with security type work.
