Position summary
A fulltime instructor in the Department of Physics with primary responsibilities 1) teaching the RESA Math-Science Center course Concepts and Applications of Physics and 2) maintaining the quality and efficacy of General Physics laboratories.
Qualifications summary
- Masters degree in education, physics education, or physics
- BS degree with successful coursework in physics
- experience teaching science at the high school level
- experience in setting up and presenting physics demonstrations and laboratories and in coaching students in physics problem solving at the HS and college levels
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
In the context of the course Concepts and Applications in Physics
- preparing and presenting lectures, leading discussions, and involving demonstrations as appropriate
- assigning and either grading or producing heys for homework problems, quizes, and tests
- stimulating, monitoring, and evaluating student engagement and progress
- participating in weekly physics faculty meetings and a limited number of outreach activities; regular consults with the chair as needed
- coordinating with the RESA Math and Science Center and Student Events Coordinator in matters of scheduling, reporting, and supporting students
- monitoring and developing content; leading out in the laboratories,
Supervisory responsibilities
In the context of Concepts and Applications in Physics and General Physics, supervising teaching and/or learning assistants who will be
- aiding individual students or student groups with in-class exercises, homework, class procedures
- guiding students with small group learning
- recording and reporting attendance, grades, and other measures of academic performance
- alerting the teacher of record with regards to special student needs or issues
- setting up and taking down laboratory materials and giving technical support to students
In the context of departmental equipment and services, coordinating with the Physics Admin Assistant with regards to
- inventory levels and purchasing
- equipment repairs and replacement
- manuals and copying
Qualifications
- Masters degree in education, physics education, or physics
- BS degree including coursework in physics
- experience teaching science at the high school level
- experience in setting up and presenting physics demonstrations and laboratories and in coaching students in physics problem solving at the HS and college levels
- ability to communicate clearly in English and in math
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
expertise in WORD and EXCEL
nominal use of ZOOM, breakout rooms, whiteboard apps, and tablets
posting shared Google docs, sheets, and other files
preparing and presenting PowerPoint and PDF files with existing AV equipment in HYH207
maintaining e-folders in departmental sharedrive
using computer assisted data taking and analysis for the General Physics suite of laboratories
Interpersonal interactions
Must have a good vibe with students who may be apprehensive about physics and need encouragement. Must have a positive attitude about helping HS and college students reach their full potential and care for their well-being holistically. Must be collegial and transparent with departmental colleagues and rely on them when needed. Must know how to maintain order in the classroom without suppressing student spirit, enthusiasm, and creativity.
Physical demands
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Work environment
Classroon with projector and white boards and laboratory with projector and computers for student use.
