Position summary

Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, Faculty Member

The faculty teaching graduate courses in world mission studies holds a full-time appointment in the Department of World Mission and is involved in pedagogy, service, and scholarship responsibilities in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the SDA Theological Seminary and Andrews University. This person demonstrates competence in teaching, service, leadership, advising, research, and publication in missiological studies. The faculty also serves on thesis and dissertation committees, on departmental and university committees, maintains an active research agenda documented through publications and presentations, and provides service to the university and community.

Qualifications summary

An earned doctoral degree (Ph.D. preferred) in mission studies with ministry and academic experience in areas such as general missiology, urban mission, mission to unreached people, world mission strategy, and mission to post-Christians.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities


  1. Teach a full load of courses in mission studies at the master's and doctoral levels.

  2. Advise and provide mentorship to graduate students in their program and course plan and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.

  3. Provide advocacy and leadership in world mission studies to the Seminary and the Seventh-day Adventist Church (and beyond).

  4. Participate in Seminary and University life and responsibilities.

  5. Provide support to the new Urban Mission concentration for the MDiv program and other programs such as the Doctor of Missiology and the Ph.D. in Mission and Ministry.

  6. Carry regular faculty responsibilities for teaching, service, research, publication, and administration.

  7. Develop a research agenda demonstrated through publications and/or presentations at professional conferences.

  8. Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to help them monitor their learning progress.

  9. Participate in program, department, and university committees and services.

  10. Teach online and courses blended with remote and face-to-face delivery.

  11. Develop proficiency in multiple technology platforms for student learning and portfolios.

  12. Pursue university-required activities for eligibility for promotion and tenure



Supervisory responsibilities


  1. Work with the administrative assistant and department colleagues and oversee graduate assistants as needed.

  2. Participate in program, department, and university committees, service and opportunities that support the goals, mission, and values of the Adventist Church.



Qualifications


  1. A qualified individual with an earned doctoral degree (Ph.D. preferred) in mission studies with emphasis and experience in general missiology, urban mission, mission to unreached people, world mission strategy, and mission to post-Christian and nones.

  2. Capacity to communicate effectively and dynamically both on a popular and scholarly level in English.

  3. Experience in teaching, mission strategy, and urban ministry in the Adventist Church.

  4. Record of academic engagement and publications is desired along with a potential research agenda and editing experience in the area of expertise.

  5. An understanding of adult learning practices and how to apply them in missiological and theological education context.

  6. Interest in continuously exploring and mastering technology as an instructional tool.

  7. Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to collaborate well with colleagues; and a disposition conducive to interacting winsomely with a diverse population of faculty colleagues, students, and staff.

  8. A personal history of healthy human relations, high moral integrity, and Christian spiritual maturity.

  9. Feel comfortable working cooperatively and effectively with other departments on campus as well as immediate coworkers and students to help resolve problems and make decisions that enhance departmental and program effectiveness.

  10. A commitment to mentoring masters and doctoral students.

  11. Solid support of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and mission, and a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies


  1. Technical competencies as needed to successfully perform teaching, researching, advising, and administrative responsibilities.

  2. Ability to prepare and organize a wide variety of documents, reports, files, and information in various formats.

  3. Ability to teach on various online platforms (zoom, Microsoft Teams, Learning Hub, etc.) and delivery formats (virtual, face-to-face, and hybrid)

Physical demands

Physical abilities as needed to fulfill teaching, service, and researching responsibilities. A successful individual will be able to meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of the job. This job requires the employee to sit for periods of a few hours at a time, use hands with freedom, reach out with hands and arms, stand and walk, crouch and crawl, lift and move 50 lbs., and use a computer and telephone, etc.

Work environment

Climate-controlled office space with low to moderate noise levels.
