Position summary

The Department of Physics at Andrews University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position to commence in July 2023.  Candidates with research interests in any area of  physics or astronomy will be considered and the successful candidate is expected to establish an active research program in physics.  Teaching experience in introductory, intermediate, and advanced physics courses is preferred  but evidence of pedagogical talent, creativity, dedication, and commitment is sufficient. 

Qualifications summary

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate courses required for general education, professional career preparation, and entry into graduate academic programs. The candidate’s academic and research experience at the core of their physics doctoral degree or postdoc is expected to play a key role in upper division coursework, inspiring and equiping majors for subsequent advanced study or for direct entry into the workforce.


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Participate fully in department life, including outreach, recruitment, student advising, mentoring, and colloquium events as well as research, teaching and pedagogy.  This will require a balanced, practical philosophy of teaching which emphasizes creativity, empathy, service, approachability, and congeniality with students, educators, university colleagues, and the general public. Connect with learners from diverse backgrounds and spiritual paths.

Supervisory responsibilities

Supervisory responsibilties include identifying and equiping students to serve as groupwork learning assistants and classroom and laboratory teaching assistants as well as suitable research assistants.  Seeking internal and external financial opportunities to support research personnel, equipment, and activities is expected.  

Qualifications

A PhD in Physics is required.  A suitable postdoc experience that can further define and launch a research program is preferred.  Advanced mathematics, computer programming, and laboratory technical skills are expected to model and test teaching, experimental, and theoretical ideas and demonstrate physics concepts.

Technical competencies

Technical competencies needed include acquiring, creating, and/or commissioning advanced computer programs for data acquisition, manipulation, calculation, modeling, and graphics pertinent to physics teaching and research.  Producing engaging visuals to communicate physics ideas and findings is of particular value.

Interpersonal interactions

Natural and intentional collegiality with peer faculty, staff, and students is needed to foster create a warm, inviting mentoring environment in the physics department while promoting and supporting high standards of scientific excellence.  In all ways, the successful candicate must be willing to respect  varying backgrounds, goals, roles, and skill levels in the department community.

Physical demands

Candidates must be able to transport and arrange standard physics teaching laboratory and presentation equipment.  

Work environment

The work environment in Haughey Hall will normally include a private office, physics teaching laboratories, classrooms, and amphitheatres as needed.  A research laboratory will be made available and outfitted according to need and funding.
