Position summary
The faculty teaching graduate courses in discipleship and family ministry holds a full-time appointment in the Department of Discipleship and Lifespan Education and is involved in pedagogy, service, and scholarship responsibilities in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the SDA Theological Seminary and Andrews University. This person demonstrates competence in teaching, service, leadership, advising, research, and publication in discipleship and family studies. The faculty also serves on thesis and dissertation committees, on departmental and university committees, maintains an active research agenda documented through publications and presentations, and provide service to the university and community.
Qualifications summary
An earned doctoral degree (PhD) in discipleship and/or family studies (or related area such as marriage and family, social work, etc.) with ministry and academic experience in areas such as discipleship, marriage and family, human sexuality, parenting, internal dynamics of families, children, youth and young adults and older adults.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Teach a full load of courses in discipleship and family ministry at the masters and doctoral levels.
- Advise and provide mentorship to graduate students in their program and course plan and serve on doctoral dissertation committees.
- Provide advocacy and leadership in discipleship and family studies to the Seminary and the Seventh-day Adventist Church (and beyond).
- Participate in Seminary and University life and responsibilities.
- Provide support to the family ministry concentration for the MDiv program as well as other programs such as the Doctor of Ministry Family Ministry cohort and the PhD in Discipleship and Lifespan Education.
- Carry regular faculty responsibilities related to teaching, service, research, publication, and administration.
- Develop a research agenda demonstrated through publications and/or presentations at professional conferences.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to help them monitor their learning progress.
- Participate in program, department and university committees and services.
- Teach online and courses blended with remote and face-to-face delivery.
- Develop proficiency in multiple technology platforms for student learning and portfolios.
- Pursue university-required activities for eligibility for promotion and tenure.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Work with administrative assistant and oversee graduate assistant as needed.
- Participate in program, department, and university committees, service and opportunities that support the goals, mission, and values of the Adventist Church.
Qualifications
- A qualified individual with an earned doctoral degree (PhD) in discipleship and/or family studies with emphasis and experience in discipleship and family ministry across the lifespan.
- Capacity to communicate effectively and dynamically both on a popular and scholarly level in English.
- Experience in teaching discipleship and/or family ministry in the Adventist Church.
- Record of academic engagement and publications is desired along with a potential research agenda and editing experience in area of expertise.
- An understanding of adult learning practices and how to apply it in the context of discipleship and lifespan education.
- Interest in continuously exploring and mastering technology as an instructional tool.
- Strong interpersonal skills: the ability to collaborate well with colleagues; and a disposition conducive to interacting winsomely with a diversity population of faculty colleagues, students, and staff.
- A personal history of healthy human relations, high moral integrity, and Christian spiritual maturity.
- Feel comfortable working cooperatively and effectively with other departments on campus as well as immediate coworkers and students to help resolve problems and make decisions that enhance departmental and program effectiveness.
- A commitment to mentor masters and doctoral students.
- Solid support of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and mission, and a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
- Technical competencies as needed to successfully perform teaching, researching, advising, and administrative responsibilities.
- Ability to prepare and organize a wide variety of documents, reports, files, and information in various formats.
- Ability to teach on various online platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Learning Hub, etc.) and delivery formats (virtual, face-to-face, and hybrid)

Physical abilities as needed to fulfill teaching, service, and researching responsibilities. A successful individual will be able to meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of the job. This job requires the employee to sit for periods of a few hours at a time, use hands with freedom, reach out with hands and arms, stand, and walk, crouch and crawl, lift and move 50 lbs., use a computer and telephone, etc.
