WAUS - Technical Director

Position summary

As part of the full-time staff, the Technical Director shares responsiblity for all areas of station activity, is directly responsible for the physical plant, engineering, broadcast operations, studio service rental, and computer information systems. The Technical Director reports to the General Manager.

Qualifications summary

Broadcasting experience, classical format preferred, IT administration experience, familiarity with ENCO DAD & Presenter Broadcast and radio automation systems, Telos AoIP, basic electronics and signal flow, FM Signal Processing, FM Transmitter knowledge a plus. Bachelors degree and prior radio work experience required.             


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties include preparing for and performing specified airshifts.

Responsibilities/Duties

For engineering may include,:

serving as the designated Chief Operator for FCC purposes;

supervising contract engineering services; maintaining existing studio and transmitter equipment and installing new equipment;

For engineering will include,:

-- maintaining the WAUS signal at its maximum effectiveness and clarity;

overseeing all technical aspects of operations, including studio and remote production;

-- ordering of equipment and supplies, and maintaining inventory;

administering engineering budget;

-- training station employees in matters of technical operations;

keeping abreast of all FCC and other applicable rules and regulations in the technical area, and assuring WAUS compliance;

liaison with streaming, distribution, satellite operations and technical staff.

For the physical plant:

the upkeep of office, studio and transmitter facilities and liaison with A.U. custodial and plant services departments.

For other matters of broadcast operations:

the Technical Director is a member of the management team who serves as a personnel director for student staff with regard to equipment and operations;

-- along with the Program Director,  coordination, mainmtenance and backup of digital assets;

--coordinating use and upkeep of computer systems (hardware and software) for music library, development, marketing, donor records, and other purposes.

Work may involve such other duties as assigned and agreed upon with station manager.

The Technical Director is a member of the management team who serves as a personnel director for student staff with regard to equipment and operations;

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree with Major or emphasis in IT

Fluent in word processing, spreadsheets, database. IT Administration, AoIP AES97 Protocols, Web site administration, Audio & Video production and streaming, ENCO, Telos, and Audio signal processing


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies

--Able to record, process and deliver audio to streaming and analog platforms

--Able to manage digital assets in ENCO DAD Libraries and Automationn.

--Able to troubleshoot computer hardware and software and network issues

--Able to operate broadcast mixing board & proper microphone technique

Interpersonal interactions

Must be able to take direction; interact with students in an advisory capacity; interact & communicate with supervisor & colleagues in a professional and timely manner; respond quickly to complex problems in multiple systems;  appear, and speak publicly at radio station events & sponsored functions; represent WAUS at non-radio station functions as assigned.

Physical demands

Ability to work in occasionally tight, confined spaces

Comfortable setting up computers and running cabling in an office environment

24/7 on call for radio broadcast troubleshooting and restoration of broadcast 

Work environment

The work environment is in three general locations: WAUS broadcast studios at the Howard Performing Arts Center, the WAUS, Tower, and transmitter site, and the engineering &production studios at WAUS.

This is an in-person position, and the Technical Director must be physically present for all on-site, on-air, and public duties.
