PLANT SERVICE - Plumber

Position summary

Assembles, installs, and repairs pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems by performing the following duties. 

Rotates weekend shifts with other plumber to take call for emergency service calls including repairs beyond normal work hours as required. May be called in at any time to assist with emergency repairs as needed. When on normal call rotation the response time to an emergency should not exceed more than thirty minutes.

Qualifications summary

One year certificate from technical school; or two to three years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 


Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities

Inspects structure to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe.  Locates and marks position of pipe and pipe connections and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.  Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.  Cuts and threads pipe.     Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic.  Joins Pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints.  Fills pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains.

Qualifications

Current USA or Canadian Driver’s License, Journeyman’s License preferred

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.  The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 85 pounds and occasionally lift and / or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

 

Work environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, raw sewage, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
