Duties and responsibilities
General Responsibilities
The Assistant/Associate Dean for Student Involvement, Leadership & Activities (SILA):
- Plans and oversees a set of annual activities that respond to a diverse student population’s needs and interests.
- Offers students opportunities to develop cultural discernment and multi-cultural competence as they engage with popular culture and other cultural groups.
- Assesses student needs, participation, learning, and satisfaction to ensure continuous quality improvement.
- Directs effective communication and marketing efforts related to SILA events.
- Serves as a Campus Labs Engage* administrator; responsible for user training and campus adoption.
- Collaborates with students, administrators, and departments to achieve strategic targets and strengthen brand identity.
- Supervises the selection, training, and supervision of SILA student and contract workers.
- Oversees and directs, with the support of the Res Life Housing Coordinator, the operations of the student life office front desk in delivering timely and exceptional service.
- Directs budget planning and fiscal operations within the University’s policies and processes.
- Serves on Student Life and campus committees.
- Meets a flexible work schedule that frequently includes evenings and weekends.
- Maintains professional growth through involvement in professional associations and conferences.

Essential Responsibilities
Essential responsibilities include directing and supporting people and processes related to student activities, new student orientation, student organizations, and serving as the General Sponsor for the undergraduate Andrews University Student Association (AUSA).
[Student Activities]
- Provides an annual event calendar proposal to the Dean for Student Life detailing the scheduled social, cultural, and recreational programming for the upcoming academic year no later than July 1.
- Implements and provides supervision for social, cultural, and recreational programming generated by the SILA office, including ensuring that options are available on most Saturday evenings, September-April, when school is in session.
- Sustains campus traditions and promotes the University’s mascot, the Cardinal.
- Manages reservations for the Campus Center, the main floor hallways, and lobby areas, including the William Mutch Recreation Center and the tubing hill.
- Negotiates and manages contracts with professional entertainers, caterers, and rental companies.
- Assists other campus entities in the development/execution of priority campus events (i.e., Change Day, University Convocation Reception, Open Recreations)
- Implements an annual assessment of student activities and involvement in consultation with the Dean for Student Life.
[New Student Orientation]
- The Assistant/Associate Dean collaborates with the Associate VP for University Culture and Inclusion to plan and implement New Student Orientation for undergraduate students.
- Recruits, selects, trains, and oversees approximately 40 New Student Mentors, in consultation with the Associate VP for University Culture and Inclusion.
- Develops Mentoring Group programming for New Student Orientation.
- Oversees the planning of Orientation food events with Dining Services catering.
- Collaborates with the Associate VP for University Culture and Inclusion and various University entities, as needed, to deliver a well-orchestrated Orientation Week. Duties include, but are not limited to, facility reservations, collection and organization of new student materials, organization and implementation of Orientation Week social and recreational activities, management of Student Association leader involvement in Orientation Week activities, direction and oversight of New Student Mentors and the Mentoring Groups.
- Manages related expenditures for Orientation Week within established budget targets set by the Associate VP for University Culture and Inclusion.
[Student Clubs and Organizations / Leadership Development]

Directs processes for new and established student clubs and organizations to ensure that programs and events, posters and marketing materials, facility usage, etc., operate according to established policies.

Directs the support processes and supervision for 60+ student clubs and organizations, ensuring the development of appropriate social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities consistent with the established values of Andrews University.

Serves as a resource for student organizations when the official organization’s sponsor is unavailable or when a next-level intervention is needed.

Directs and implements the annual club and organization fair for all registered student organizations.

Provides orientation and ongoing leadership development for student organizations, including training student leaders and sponsors on University procedures and using the Campus Labs Engage software module.

Plans and implements training and development of student leaders approximately three times a year.

Develops and maintains a Student Clubs and Organizations guidelines/handbook of best practices at Andrews University.
[Andrews University Student Associations]
Develops and maintains a synergistic relationship between the Student Involvement, Leadership & Activities office and the Andrews Undergraduate Student Association (AUSA), and the Andrews University Graduate Student Association (AUGSA).
AUGSA: Provides support to the Graduate Student Association and the AUGSA sponsor, as needed.
AUSA: Under the oversight of the Dean of Student Life, the SILA serves as the General Sponsor of the undergraduate Andrews University Student Association, providing leadership for all of its activities and responsibilities detailed in the AUSA constitution and by-laws.
- Provides leadership development, training, and support for all AUSA executive officers.
- Ensures the AUSA activities are consistent with the University’s mission, values, and standards.
- Supervises, advises, and mentors the AUSA Social Vice President and the Student Services officers to foster a wide variety of social activities and student services.
- Supervises the AUSA officer who manages the William Mutch Recreation Center.
- Provides historical background and maintains relevant documentation for the transitions of AUSA officers.
- Advises AUSA officers regarding all budget expenditures, providing accountability to ensure compliance with all established AUSA and Andrews University financial procedures.
- Ensures supervision at all AUSA events by personal presence and/or faculty or staff members.
- Helps to plan and participate in AUSA officer preschool and transitional year-end meetings.
- Attends the annual Adventist Intercollegiate Association (AIA) Conference and assists in the AUSA officers' travel plans.
- Provides leadership in planning the AIA Conference during the Andrews University rotational year, in consultation with the Vice President for Campus & Student Life and the Dean for Student Life.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Provides supervision, ongoing training, and support to student workers in their specified responsibilities, including supervision/support to Student Life front desk workers.
- Provides supervision, ongoing training, and support to hundreds of AUSA and AUGSA officers and student organization leaders, and their sponsors who transition annually.
