Position summary
This position is posted for the filling of a full-time shift position.
Primary responsibilities include providing for the safety of the campus through a myriad of responsibilities, including responding to emergencies, requests for assistance, through use of communication systems as well serving as primary liaison between the public and the Office.
The position is considered an essential employee and will be responsible to work a regular shift schedule that can include; working during a section of a 24 hour day, working weekends and holidays, including during Sabbath hours.
Qualifications summary
Associate’s degree from two-year college or university; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Any military and/or law enforcement experience is preferred. Candidate must pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Candidate must meet qualifications in several areas, including skills in computer use, language, reasoning, and physical requirements. Candidates capapble of being cross-trained as a Patrol Officer are preferred.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Coordinates with on campus departments for report investigation.
- Communicates with local emergency services for response assistance.
- Creation of incident reports and dispatches patrol officer to respond as necessary.
- Enforce parking & traffic regulations.
- Issues vehicle permits for regular/temporary parking, fishing, and bicycle registration.
- Maintains communication and documents activity of patrol officers.
- Monitor 911 Onsite Notification Line for outgoing 911 emergency phone calls.
- Monitor Access Control System.
- Monitor both fire and security alarm reporting system.
- Monitors campus surveillance system.
- Performs University switchboard duties daily 5pm-9am (shift dependent)
- Provides customer service activities for registration, citations, appeals, and general information.
- Receive Lost/Found items for campus with proper documentation.
- Receive reports from the anonymous Tip Line.
- Receives afterhours calls for Housing Office (shift dependent)
- Receives afterhours emergency call requests for Plant Services. (shift dependent)
- Regulates nighttime access onto the campus via gatehouse activities (shift dependent).
- Responsible to activate University Emergency Alert System.
- Searches applicable data bases for vehicles, citations, and historical files as necessary including NIDA, Banner and vault.
- Submit End of Shift (EOS) Reports.
- Uses a variety of office machines (copier, fax, scanner, credit card machine, shredder, etc.)

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Education/Certification
- Post-secondary education or two years job-related work experience in law enforcement and/or military preferred.
- Must have or be capable of obtaining certification in CPR, First Aid and AED.
- Must be capable of completing, or have completed, a formal law enforcement training academy (BCSD Reserve Officer Training Academy)
- Must be capable of completing, or have completed, a formal Dispatch certification (such as APCO Telecommunicator)
- Must have or obtain a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Ability to rely on experience, training and judgment to execute policies and procedures.
- Must have or be able to obtain FEMA National Incident Management Courses and Series:
- IS 100 – Introduction to Incident Command Systems
- IS 200 – ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action
- IS 700 – National Incident Management Systems (NIMS), An Introduction
- IS 800 – National Response Framework, An Introduction
- Language Skills:
- Ability to explain policies in difficult situations
- Write and edit reports or technical documents
- Coordinate the work of others, or other activities requiring significant communication skills.
- Handling of confidential information.
- Ability to communicate with individuals coming from various linguistic backgrounds.
- Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add/subtract and multiply/divide.

This position is a customer service position as a main point of contact for the Office of Campus Safety with the public. The employee is expected to meet the objectives of Campus Safety while promoting a Christian, friendly environment, both to our diverse campus as well as within the office. Specific skills can include, but are not limited to:
- Ability to work cohesively in a team oriented environment.
- Advance communication and customer service skills with the faculty, staff, students, community visitors and emergency response agencies over the telephone and in person to resolve conflicts or respond to emergency incidents.
- Must have excellent human relation skills, dealing with a wide variety of people.
Physical demands
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is regularly required to use other senses to talk, hear, taste, and/or smell. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, jump, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee may also be required to work in/be exposed to, all weather conditions associated with the State of Michigan.

Employees are also regularly assigned to work out of the University Gatehouse, where they will be working at service window interacting with vehicles entering and exiting the campus. Due to the nature of security work, during these common activities an employee might be confronted with potentially dangerous situations associated with security type work.
