NURSING - Adjunct Nursing Clinical Instructor

Position summary
The adjunct nursing clinical instructor supervises students' clinical experience at the clinical site and evaluates their performance.
Qualifications summary
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (minimum requirement)
- At least 1 year work experience in relevant clinical/hospital fields including but not limited to med-surg, psychiatric, obstetric, pediatric, etc.
- Current Michigan RN licensure and/or Indiana RN licensure as pertaining to clinical site
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
- Attends orientation as coordinated by Clinical Director and is available from the beginning of the designated semester through the official end of the semester for clinical/skills supervision on the designated clinical day
- Collaborates with the Course Lead Instructor with skills check off, and simulation activities.
- Adjuncts are encouraged to contact unit manager to arrange opportunities to briefly shadow a nurse on the assigned unit prior to the first day of clinical to see routine
- Required to complete all hospital requirements prior to the first day (ex: modules, EPIC, safety, etc.)
- Works with/ supervises a group of up to 8 students in hospital
- Orients students to the clinical site and facilitates a scavenger hunt on the first day of clinical
- Coordinates the clinical assignment for the students (usually includes pairing them with nurses) so that they can provide patient care with the nurse’s supervision
- Supervises students when they administer medication until student practices are safe to be supervised by the nurse.
- Is present in the clinical setting with students during the entire shift and is available to assist them as needed with patient care if the patient nurse is not available
- Helps students with critical thinking in patient care and discusses the expectations of patient encounters and documentation
- Provides ongoing oral and written feedback to students for improvement of student’s clinical performance, intervention techniques and assignments including midterm and final student evaluation during face-to-face meetings or email communication
- Has post conference meeting (debriefing) toward the end of shift with students and evaluates their critical thinking and performance * select students to provide hand-off report during post conference each shift (this allows students to learn from each other under the direction of the clinical instructor)
- Makes every effort (when possible) to assign patients weekly that are similar to topics discussed in class (that week or prior)
- Discusses the day’s cases during post conference that align (as best as possible) with topics discussed in class (that week or prior), helping students to better understand clinical matters
- Immediately communicates to the course lead instructor any issues regarding unsafe practices, student behavior, clinical skills, or student progression

- Clinical at hospitals or care facilities (ie St Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana or Corewell Health Hospital in St Joseph or Niles, Michigan).
- Skills lab/simulation day(s) at Andrews University, Marsh Hall
- For some specialty areas (pediatric, or community), rotations may include clinics or other health agencies as appropriate
