Position summary
Andrews University is searching for a principal who has a strong vision for Seventh-day Adventist education in the twenty-first century and will provide spiritual and academic leadership at the Ruth Murdoch Elementary School. Ruth Murdoch Elementary is a K – 8 school with a rich national and ethnic diversity. The successful candidate will be someone who is a role model to teachers and students; is adept at working in a rich multicultural environment; has demonstrable excellence as a classroom teacher and an experienced administrator; understands NAD curriculum, good teaching, and policy; and has a philosophy of being visible and available to teachers, students, and parents. The principal will work with the teachers and staff to develop each student spiritually, academically, artistically, socially and physically in a nurturing environment that promotes living faith, academic excellence, leadership and service within the Church community and society.
Qualifications summary
Minimum Qualifications
- A Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing
- Master’s Degree from an accredited College or University
- North American Division (NAD) Certification; both Teacher and Principal Certification desired
- Demonstrated leadership ability in an educational environment with a minimum of three (3) years as a principal or assistant principal at a Seventh-day Adventist elementary school or junior academy
- Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience; three (3) or more years in a Seventh-day Adventist school
- Candidate must have the ability to inspire the school community; faculty and staff, students, parents, board and pastors
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission of Seventh-day Adventist Education
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership ability in an educational environment with a minimum of five (5) years as a principal at a Seventh-day Adventist elementary school or junior academy working with diverse populations, preferred

Duties and responsibilities
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze, share, and use school and student achievement data to improve instruction
- Implement systematic procedures to assess teaching and program/school effectiveness
- Monitor curriculum implementation to ensure that the appropriate content and sequence are followed
- Organize and manage the daily operations of school
- Hire, supervise and evaluate all teaching and support staff
- Identify staff training needs; develop and implement school improvement training plan to meet those needs
- Prepare and submit the school budget; and monitor expenditures according to policy
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with members of the community to ensure their continued involvement and support.
- Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior. Serve as a role model for all campus staff
- Implement, monitor and regularly update the school’s strategic plan
- Lead student recruitment efforts and implement an enrollment management plan
- Establish and maintain relationships with the Home and School Director and other community organizations to ensure ongoing, two-way communication and initiate activities which foster productive parent and community involvement
- Develop and maintain an ongoing program for institutional advancement and fundraising
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical competencies
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- A thorough understanding of the philosophy and operations of Seventh-day Adventist schools and a strong desire to ensure an SDA identity in the Ruth Murdoch Elementary School
- A working knowledge of NAD K-8 curriculum
- Skill in evaluating instructional programs and teacher effectiveness
- Skill in managing staff, operations, projects, and budgets
- Having the skill to be an inspiring and visible leader at school and community events
- Possessing educational leadership that attracts and retains excellent teachers and staff, ensures academic goals are achieved, maintains accreditation, and implements policies, directives, and initiatives
- Having a comprehensive working knowledge of school financial and budgeting systems
- Having the ability to oversee plant and facilities management in order to maintain a safe and attractive learning environment
- Having the ability to work collaboratively with the school board, pastors, teachers, students, and parents
- Having a commitment to oversee a strong instructional technology program and ongoing updates of the school’s technology plan
- Having competence in staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation
- Having problem-solving skills and the ability to act effectively under stress
- Having the ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to inspire outstanding performance as well as good morale
