Position summary
With a high degree and wide range of day-to-day independent decision making, the associate director complements the work of the director in overseeing all aspects of the operation of the Press, including editorial product development and planning, publicity and marketing, and direct management of all major business operations of Andrews University Press.
Qualifications summary
Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s degree, and proven record of three to five years related business experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Academic/Editorial Experience and Skills: The ideal candidate will have a clear understanding of the academic environment, and particularly of academic publications and publishing; an ability to evaluate a proposed project for its appropriateness and possibilities as an academic publication, and to actively counsel and participate in its development for that purpose.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities

Managing Editor of Andrews Study Bible product line: In concert with the director, the associate director initiates new products built on the original edition of the Andrews Study Bible. Conceptualizes the product, prepares budgets, produces necessary prospectuses, researches, makes business arrangements and prepares contracts for vendors and personnel hires, develops production schedule, makes appropriate assignments in conjunction with the Editor.

Marketing and Public Events: With travel as increasingly necessary, the associate director conceptualizes, initiates, coordinates and executes marketing .These may include development and maintenance of target market databases, development of print and electronic media projects, management of travel, accommodation and logistics for exhibits and public presentations.

Editorial product development and planning: Evaluates the business potential and editorial credibility of any book or other product as an academic publication worthy of the Press, and advises how it should be created and readied for the market.
- Budgeting: General responsibility for creating and monitoring the Press’s annual budget, using standard sales forecasting techniques.
Financial Reports and Statements: General responsibility for creating and interpreting all financial reports and statements.

Statistical Reports: General responsibility for creating all statistical reports, including actual sales, sales trends, and inventory projections, among others.

Record Management: Responsible for oversight of all financial record management, and thus acts as Press liaison with university financial records office.

Author Relations and Royalties: Responsible for handling all business interactions with authors related to contracts and royalties, and for the annual processing of royalties, including calculation, check requesting, payment delivery and record keeping.

Customer Service and Sales: General responsibility for direct oversight of the entire sales/order fulfillment and customer service operation, including the acquisition, installation, employee training and implementation of regularly upgraded business database software .

Building Management, Warehouse and Inventory: General responsibility to oversee the building management of Andrews University Press, including Sutherland House and warehouse operations. This includes basic physical care of the property expected of the occupants, liaison with the University plant service department, appropriate climate control, cleanliness of physical work environment, equipment maintenance and inventory ordering, receiving, and security.

Information Technology: General responsibility to maintain IT infrastructure of Press operations, including supervision of all hardware and software needs and operations database.

Vendor Relations: General responsibility to manage all major vendor relations with printers and a wide variety of suppliers.
Supervisory responsibilities
General responsibility to manage student labor workforce for the Press. Directly supervises 3-8 student employees as office workers and support staff. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Travel: Must be willing and able to travel, occasionally for extended periods of time, to represent the interests of the Press for product development and sales activity.

Business Professional Skills: Ability to read, understand, develop, correct, update or otherwise edit, and effectively use a wide variety of business documents, financial statements and reports in many formats. Readily conversant in the language and vocabulary of business and financial management.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, royalties and all other values normally expected in business management. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Technical competencies
Computer Skills: Strong practical knowledge of all computer software applications customarily used and expected in a sales operation, including word processing, database, spreadsheets, standard financial management, sales, and order fulfillment.
Interpersonal interactions
Must interact comfortably with all the people who interact with the Press: students, faculty, staff, customers and vendors. Must have a warm and friendly personality. Must be willing to help customers according to their needs. Must be willing to train and supervise students. Must be a team player and fit comfortably with the office atmosphere, including particularly its spiritual/faith-based focus.

·Use of Equipment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to effectively use all the equipment, hardware and software elements of a standard business office. On occasions when student workers are not available to perform certain duties, the employee may be required to use scales, packaging equipment, small hand-tools (for minor, incidental equipment or building maintenance), and service vehicles for transport of material, etc.
