AICER Symposium with Graduate Students

Andrews International Center for Educational Research ( AICER) invites students and faculty to attend a symposium  on Thursday November 21, at 5:30 p.m.

Presenters:  Margeaux Levy, Tammy Overstreet, Olivia Spence (Andrews Curriculum and Instruction Students)

Title:  Why Do They Choose to Become Teachers and Why Does it Matter?

This study examines when and why teachers choose the teaching career and the relationship between their motivations and their beliefs. The researchers used secondary data from the FIT-Choice survey with parochial, in-service teachers. The findings indicate that students commonly choose teaching as a career while in grade school or in college, with very few deciding in high school. This study also identified the following five factors for choosing teaching: a desire to help shape the future, a desire to work with children and adolescents, perceived ability to teach well, a desire to make social contributions, and intrinsic career value. These reasons are consistent across age, race, and gender.

Face-to-face participants meet in Bell Hall 013.
