Dr. Long completed doctoral study in microbiology and immunology at University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and a postdoctoral fellowship in vector biology at University of California, Davis. Her research goals are to clarify determinants of vector competence, to explore the ecology and emergence of arthropod-borne viruses and to develop field methods to monitor virus transmission dynamics, with a strong interest in public health underlying all of her work. She has received funding from NSF, NIH and DOD. Her last 12 years have been spent living and working in the tropics and subtropics of Cameroon, Texas, and Peru. She now braves Michigan winters.
