MA Learning Technologies


The Masters in Learning Technologies professional degree prepares digital educators to design and facilitate inclusive online and blended learning environments for K-12 students, adult learners, and life-long learning in a variety of contexts. Students of all varieties need to be able to thrive, advance, and contribute in an interconnected and constantly changing society. Educators interested in meeting these needs will gain the digital age skills and pedagogical strategies in order to be successful in the many roles they play as teachers and learners. In addition, digital educators prepared in this program will be able to leverage the technologies available to them in order to succeed in the rapidly changing 21st century classroom. Program participants intending to support educational technology in higher education, non-profit, or corporate learning environments will be prepared to provide personalized digital learning for a variety of learners and contexts.

Career Potential

Graduates of the Andrews University Learning Technologies program may serve as classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, teacher educators, educational/instructional technology specialists, directors of digital learning, instructional technology consultants, and researchers.

Program Length and Prerequisites

30 credits for students with a Bachelor in education or equivalent degree. Up to 15 credit hours of prerequisites depending on undergraduate degree and educational technology courses taken. Can typically be completed by a full-time student needing no prerequisites in 1 full year.

After we receive your unofficial or official transcripts, we can determine how many prerequisites you need to take (if any), and if you any of your graduate credits can transfer into the program.

Online Delivery

This program is offered in an interactive online format. Some courses are fully asynchronous with teacher interaction and weekly deadlines; others offered in the evenings via synchronous sessions with significant teacher and peer interaction. This online degree does not require any on-campus time.

Program Goals

  • To graduate students who are thought leaders and innovators in the area of educational technology.
  • To graduate students who possess the knowledge and skills necessary to evaluate the needs of their learners; develop and implement instructional materials and activities; and assess and evaluate those activities.
  • To graduate students who will possess expertise in a variety of different technologies and applications designed for use in instructional settings, and a deep understanding of why and when to use these technologies.


  • Nine (9) semester credits of education courses, including an undergraduate (or graduate equivalent) in educational psychology. GDPC 514 Psychology of Learning (3 credits) will be required for those who do not meet the above prerequisite. Persons who seek admission to the MA without the prerequisites may be required to include additional courses, such as EDTE 508 Principles of Teaching and Learning, in their course plan. These prerequisites add to the total number of credits needed to complete the degree.
  • Six (6) semester credits of educational technology courses taken prior to the start of the program.

Admission decisions are based on the overall profile of each applicant. The applicant profile consists of information that indicates personal “fit” with the Learning Technologies program and potential for success in the program. The LT Program accepts applications on a rolling basis, with students being able to begin their course of study during any semester. In addition to application materials required of all graduate school applicants, the following items are of particular importance:

  • A 600-word statement of purpose explaining how your professional goals fit with the mission of the Learning Technologies program. Identify whether you will focus on K12 students or other educational technology contexts (i.e. corporate training, digital outreach, higher education). Describe your skill level with technology and include links to your digital footprint.
  • Recommendation forms and letters from professionals. Do not submit recommendations from relatives or current students.
  • A completed Professional Experience form.
  • A current resumé or curriculum vita (CV).
  • Official transcripts from all schools where undergraduate or graduate courses were taken.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general exam scores.
  • Documentation of English proficiency (see University Graduate Programs General Admission Requirements for details).

Program Director

Janine Lim, PhD, currently serves as associate dean for online higher education in the School of Distance Education at Andrews University, in Berrien Springs, MI. She is also Professor of Educational Technology in the School of Education. She and her team support over 200 online courses, provide training for faculty teaching online, and work with the campus infrastructure support of online learning. Her department also provides educational technology and Moodle support for faculty and students. In addition, Janine is responsible for the faculty and courses of the Consortium of Adventist Colleges and Universities. Janine has taught over 15 unique graduate educational technology classes online numerous times over the past 15 years, with some classes attracting participants from all over the world. Her undergraduate teaching includes social media courses for communication and digital media majors. Janine has served on the board of the United States Distance Learning Association since April 2015.

Prior to her work at Andrews University, Janine coordinated distance education for 22 K12 school districts in southwest Michigan for 14 years. In that position, as one of the co-founders of TWICE, Michigan’s K12 Videoconferencing Organization, Janine has spearheaded popular international K12 videoconference projects such as Read Around the Planet and MysteryQuest. While still serving on the board of TWICE, she was instrumental in designing and implementing the CAPspace website for collaborative videoconference projects. Janine also served on a team of Michigan educational technology trainers providing a workshop called ATA Technology Academy.
