Southwest Michigan offers much more to the extreme sports fanatic than most people realize. There are several skateboarding parks within a half hour of Andrews University, and the Indiana Skydiving Academy is located just outside South Bend. You'll also find several rock climbing gyms within an hour of campus, and, for all you climbing "purists," there are over 100 top-rope and bouldering routes two hours away at Fitzgerald Park and Oak Park outside Grand Ledge, Mich. There are even some hang-gliding excursion facilities within a few hours of Andrews, and a 450-acre "scramble area" designated for off-road vehicles on the huge sand dunes at Silver Lake State Park. Finally, several nearby state parks and recreational areas have designated mountain biking areas. However, most of the Andrews mountain bikers find plenty of suitable terrain—hills, creeks and trails—in the woods behind University Towers.
