The Howard Performing Arts Center proudly presents its 2011-2012 season which includes headliners Canadian Brass; winners of NBC’s The Sing Off: Committed; Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Maria and Baron von Trapp of The Sound of Music; chart-topping Christian artist Francesca Battistelli; and the timeless southern gospel quartet Ernie Haase & Signature Sound.

The Howard Performing Arts Center welcomes back Lake Effect Jazz Big Band to perform in half of the Opening Night! 2011 event on Sunday, August 29 at 7 p.m. This annual event is the kick off to each season and also a gift of an exceptional concert experience for the community. In addition to Lake Effect Jazz Big Band is classical guitarist Petar Jankovic of Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. His repertoire reflects Spanish, Argentine and Brazilian musical influences.

On Sunday, September 11, 2011, we remember the ten-year anniversary of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on our country. In celebration of our patriotic growth and achievements, the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony and Choral ensembles unite in a commemorative free of charge evening concert at 7 p.m. This is one of the many events remembering September 11 hosted on the campus of Andrews University.

From the NBC hit show The Sing Off, the grand prize winning group Committed is performing on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at 7 p.m. This all-male group is dedicated to creating unique harmonies with their powerful lead vocals, soaring harmonies and booming bass line—all a cappella. Singing that bass line is Geston Pierre, a graduate student at Andrews University. This six-member group comes from Andrews University’s sister school, Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. Tickets are $25.

As in years past, the Howard Center is pleased to be a stop on the winner’s tour of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. This year’s Senior Wind Division gold medal winner is The City of Tomorrow. This woodwind quintet comes from Evanston, Ill. The Fischoff Competition has grown to be one of the largest chamber music competitions in the world. Hear this ensemble on Sunday, October 2 for $5.

Representing our Christian music concert genre, Francesca Battistelli stands out among other artists with her soulful pop-tinged sensibilities and a rich, beautifully nuanced voice. This 2011 Dove Artist of the Year is known for her songs Free to Be Me and This is the Stuff. She will be performing these chart-topping hits and many more in concert on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 7 p.m. Tickets for Francesca are $20.

Andrews University Department of Music faculty Carlos Flores and Claudio Gonzalez perform in a Latin themed faculty recital on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 8 p.m. Pianist Carlos Flores, a native of Mexico City, is the chair of the Department of Music. Flores has a Ph.D. in music theory with musicology and performance. Venezuelan-born Claudio Gonzalez is a violinist with a doctoral degree in orchestra conducting. He is the conductor of the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra. Tickets for this concert are $10.

Born to a rich musical heritage, Elisabeth von Trapp is in concert Sunday, November 13, 2011 at 7 p.m. The granddaughter of legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp, whose story inspired The Sound of Music, she sings a repertoire ranging from Bach to Broadway, Shubert to Sting, and timeless wonders like Rodgers & Hammerstien’s Favorite Things and Edelweiss. Tickets are $20.
Ernie Haase & Signature Sound are in concert on
Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 7 p.m.


Violinist Carla Trynchuk with pianist Chi Yong Yun present a faculty recital on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 7 p.m. Trynchuck is a graduate of the Juilliard School. She is the director of the string program at Andrews University’s Department of Music. Yun is the director of piano studies. She is pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Tickets for this recital are $10.

Gospel music’s Grammy-nominated, Dove Award-winning quartet Ernie Haase & Signature Sound blends 21st century ideas with the timeless quality of great quartets from the 1950’s to take an unconventional approach to joyfully communicating God’s word. Founder Ernie Haase, formerly of the Cathedral Quartet, formed a group of like-minded men who share his love for God and great harmonies in 2003. Ernie, Devin McGlamery, Doug Anderson and Ian Owens are Ernie Haase & Signature Sound. Experience them in concert on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Canadian Brass makes an encore appearance at the Howard Center on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at 7 p.m. wrapping up the 2011-2012 season. Boasting an international reputation as one of the most popular brass ensembles, Canadian Brass has four decades under their belt. Current members include founding member Chuck Daellenbach, tuba; Christopher Coletti and Brandon Ridenour, trumpets; Keith Dyrda, trombone; and Eric Reed, horn. Tickets are $35.
