Herta von Stiegel, CEO of Ariya Capital in London, U.K., and Japhet De Oliveira, University chaplain, are among the featured speakers for the Andrews University graduation weekend scheduled for August 3–5, 2012.
Commencement events begin Friday evening with the consecration service in Pioneer Memorial Church and will continue with the baccalaureate church service, Sabbath afternoon certification and dedication services, Sabbath vespers, the President’s reception and finally, the graduate and undergraduate commencement service Sunday morning.
David Steen, professor of biology at Andrews University, will offer the Consecration address, “A Firm Faith” on Friday, August 3, at 8 p.m. in Pioneer Memorial Church. Steen is the outgoing chair of the Department of Biology, having taught in that department for 26 years. During his time as chair, the department’s size has doubled. He has also served as Grand Marshal of Commencement weekend for several years.

De Oliveira also serves as an adjunct professor in youth ministry at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Previously he has served as the director for the Center of Youth Evangelism at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary and youth director for the South England Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. De Oliveira has led a number of innovative projects, from the very first iPhone app in Adventist youth ministry, through evening programming and support at the International Pathfinder Camporee in Oshkosh, Wis., to the creation of 180ยบ Symposiums, a think tank that focuses on different areas of youth ministry. He is also the co-founder of the One Project, which focuses on the centrality of Jesus in the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Additional departmental services are planned for Friday, August 3, and Saturday, August 4. The School of Business Administration’s Ethics Oath Ceremony will be held in the Garber Auditorium of Chan Shun Hall on Friday at 11 a.m. Saturday’s services begin with the Seminary Dedication Service in the Seminary Chapel at 4 p.m. The Certificate Ceremony for the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences will take place in the Pioneer Memorial Church Youth Chapel at 5 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., the Social Work Recognition Service will take place in the University Towers Auditorium.
A Sabbath Vespers tribute to parents, faculty and students will be held at Pioneer Memorial Church at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 4. Immediately after vespers (approximately 9:15 p.m.), the President’s Reception for graduates and their families will take place in the Great Lakes Room of Dining Services in the Campus Center.

Herta von Stiegel, CEO of Ariya Capital in London, U.K., will give the Commencement address. Commencement begins at 9 a.m. on Sunday, August 5, at Pioneer Memorial Church. The title of her address is “Catastrophe, Complacency or Courage?” Stiegel is also the honorary degree recipient.
