Frequently Asked Questions

To help clarify things a bit...

The Inauguration of Andrea Luxton as our seventh president will take place Tuesday, October 24, 10:30 am, in Pioneer Memorial Church.

What is the purpose of having an inauguration?

Universities hold inaugurations to accomplish several goals. The occasion encourages public identification and establishment of the new president in their position. It also gives the institution an opportunity to reaffirm historic commitments, to rally the academic community around the president and to heighten institutional visibility.

Who may attend the inaugural ceremony?

All faculty, staff, students and other friends of the University, as well as those who have been invited as Official Delegates and Special Guests, are welcome.

Who is invited to march in the procession from the Andrews campus?

Those individuals who regularly march for convocation and graduation services are invited to wear full academic regalia and march in the procession. Those marching should assemble at the University Green at 10 a.m. In the event of rain, assembly will be in the lower level of Pioneer Memorial Church.

What groups will be represented in the procession?

In addition to the faculty, the procession will include the chief marshal, color guard, student delegation, delegates from other educational institutions, principal administrative officers of Andrews, members of the University board of trustees and platform party members.

Will campus offices be closed during the inauguration?

No, but hourly employees and salaried non-faculty who wish to attend the inauguration ceremony may make arrangements with their supervisor to do so.

Will hourly employees who attend the inauguration be paid?

Yes. Hourly employees who attend the inauguration with their department head’s consent, will be paid for the duration of the inaugural ceremony. If the ceremony extends beyond noon, lunch hours may extend accordingly beyond 1 p.m.

Who is invited to the luncheon following the ceremony?

Because of space limitations, the Inaugural Luncheon is planned for Official Delegates and Special Guests. Many of these individuals will be in town just  for the inauguration day. This event will provide them with an opportunity to talk briefly with Dr. Taylor.

What opportunity is provided for faculty and staff to interact with the president?

An Inaugural Evensong Vespers for faculty and staff is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Seminary Chapel. A sparkling festive reception will follow in the Seminary Commons. Several inaugural year events will continue throughout the first year of Dr.Taylor’s administration, including an academic symposium, a black-tie scholarship fundraiser and inaugural soccer game.

Where do off-campus guests receive information?

There is an Inauguration website with information available at andrews.edu/president. On the day of inauguration, there will be hosts on hand in the narthex of the church.
