Biography

Charity Garcia joined the TLC faculty in June 2017. Prior to becoming faculty at Andrews University, she spent fifteen years teaching middle school and high school students in urban, rural, and international settings. She has experience working in Adventist, as well as public and non-profit educational systems. Additionally, she worked as adjunct professor at Andrews University. Most recently, Dr. Garcia served as Director of Vocational Programming and Career Readiness at the Kinexus Bridge Academy in Benton Harbor, Michigan. She is passionate about developing teachers and resources that are prepared to meet the needs of all learners - particularly the most at-risk students. She also is interested in the intersection of education, spiritual development, and trauma-informed educational practice. In her personal time she engages in justice and reconciliation work, enjoys worshipping at Harbor of Hope SDA church, and repurposing “old junk.” She is also a foster parent to 1-3 children/youth at any time.

Current Research or Professional Activities

Dr. Garcia’s current research focuses on developing theory on the impact of spiritual development on responses to adversity within a broad understanding of educational environments. She is currently working on sharing the results of the initial study, as well as moving forward with further testing of the substantive theory. She also is working on turning her dissertation entitled, “Toward Christian-Identity Response Theory: Exploring Identity, Spirituality, and Response to Adversity Among African American Males Placed At Risk” into a theater of the oppressed.  Her research methodology focuses on qualitative methods, with particular interest in grounded theory.
