Born in Southwestern Michigan, Karen graduated from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Elementary Education in 1981. She received her M. A. in Speech Pathology in 1984 from the same institutuion. She has worked over 30 years in the public and private sector as a school speech-langage pathologist.
