Tips for Finding External Scholarships

Look locally!

  • Chamber of Commerce
    • County Community Foundations
    • Credit Unions
    • Local businesses
    • Your church or place of worship
    • Rotary, Lions, Eagles, or Elks clubs
  • Ask your parents—their employers may offer scholarships.
  • Large companies (think: Target or McDonalds) often award scholarships, but may be more competitive. Consider what is unique to you and narrow down your options from there—are you left-handed? Vegetarian? African American, Hispanic, or Native American? Searching by characteristics like these, or even based on your major, will help you find scholarships.
  • Do not be afraid to ask if a business offers scholarships—many companies have funding available, but no students apply!
  • Every scholarship is different; pay attention to deadlines and requirements.
  • Be wary of organizations that charge a fee for a scholarship or requests personal information, like social security number.
