1. Five types of isolation: continued
Protective isolation: (gown, mask, shoe coverings, & gloves)
Used when patient has weakened immune system or burns
2. Effects of over exposure of blood to EDTA:
WBCs show vacuolization, homogeneous nucleus
Plts increase in size and disintegrate
RBCs swell (increased MCV)
3. Storage times and temperatures for EDTA:
Room temp.: 2 – 3 hours
4oC  : 24 hours
4. Heparin as an anticoagulant:
May cause clumping of WBCs & Plts
Causes blue background on Wright stained slide
