When light passes through a stained
tissue the light is absorbed by the various stains. This allows for visualization of the specimen.
When light passes through an
unstained tissue the light is not absorbed leaving the specimen almost invisible. Light is passed through a special
condenser that causes the light waves striking the specimen to be shifted out of phase with those missing the
specimen. This results in the specimen becoming visible
