Unit Notes - 2
4. Oxygen transport and different hemoglobins:
Carboxyhemoglobin:
Has a high affinity for carbon monoxide which inhibits oxygen from binding
Methemoglobin:
Iron is in the ferric state (Fe+++) instead of ferrous state (Fe++) and is unable to bind oxygen
5. Cellular changes and cell morphology:
Increased cholesterol & phospholipids:
Target cells (Leptocytes)
Abnormal ratios of lecithins & sphingomyelin:
Acanthocytes
Lack of Rh antigens:
Stomatocytes
