Normal RBC counts:

Adult females =

RBC = 3.60 – 5.60 x 1012/L

Adult males =

RBC = 4.20 – 6.00 x 1012/L

Newborns =

RBC = 5.00 – 6.50 x 1012/L

1 year old =

RBC = 3.50 – 5.10 x 1012/L

Specimen of choice for RBC counts:

EDTA or heparin

Cells lysed by RBC diluting fluid:

No cells are lysed since it is normal saline
