6. Contributions of metabolic pathways:
Embden-Myerhof pathway:
90% of energy derived from anaerobic glycolysis
Methemoglobin Reductase pathway:
Converts iron from the ferric state (Fe+++) to the ferrous state (Fe++)
Rapoport-Leubering pathway:
Production of 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG)
Hexose monophosphate shunt:
Aerobic glycolysis which produces reduced glutathione which prevents denaturation of hemoglobin by oxidative molecules. The denatured Hb precipitates against cell wall as Heinz bodies
