Granular contents released into phagosome: (non-oxygen dependent killing:
Bactericidal activity of lytic enzymes cleaves segments of the antigen and changes pH
Oxygen-dependent killing:
Release of nictinomide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase which in turn causes superoxides and hydrogen peroxide to be formed
Called the “respiratory burst”
Superoxides join with myeloperoxidase to form hydrochlorous acid (bleach)
