Aspirate versus biopsy:
Aspirate:
Performed using a syringe
3 – 5 ml fluid drawn from bone marrow
Biopsy:
Performed using a trephine needle such as:
Jamshidi needle
A core of the bone and/or bone marrow is obtained
< 2 years of age = tibia
Anatomic sites for sampling:
> 2 years of age = iliac crest, lumbar vertebrae, sternum
