Collecting coagulation specimen using syringe:
Some labs may required this to be drawn using a two-syringe technique
Draw 2 – 3 mL of blood into 1st syringe and discard.
Remove 1st syringe and connect 2nd syringe to needle
Draw adequate blood so tube can be filled within + or – 10% to maintain 9:1 blood to anticoagulant ratio.
Collecting coagulation specimen using capillary puncture:
Capillary collected specimens are not suitable for coagulation testing. This is due to tissue contamination and difficulty collecting addequate speciimen before clotting begins
