Protein C
Definition:
Protein C is a vitamin K dependent protein which is activated by thrombomodulin-thrombin complex.
APC can also stimulate fibrinolysis by causing endothelial cells to release tissue plasminogen activator.
Chromogenic assay where protein C activator is added to patient plasma and the amount of colored complex formed is directly proportional to amount of protein C present.
Activated protein C (APC) then combines with Protein S and this complex will inactivate factors:
Va and VIIIa
