Platelet Aggregation Studies - 1
Function:
Measures primary hemostasis, specifically platelet function
Specimen requirements:
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) made by cetrifuging anticoagulated blood with reduced force so platelets stay in plasma section.
Principle of test:
PRP is placed in tube and tube placed into aggregometer. An aggregating agent is added the change in optical density is plotted. As the platelets aggregate the solution becomes less turbid.
In vitro aggregating agents:
ADP, epinephrine, collagen, ristocetin
