neutrophils and erythrocytes are more dense
than mononuclear cells such as lymphocytes so when anticoagulated blood is layered over a ficoll solution (greater density than
mononuclear but less dense
than neutrophils & RBC=s)
and centrifuged, the monuclear cells will be on top of the ficoll layer
